Any Guesses on the New Amazon HQ?

With the headlines about Georgia and voter suppression issues, it’s hard for me to believe that Atlanta would still be in the running. The political climate has to be at least part of the selection criteria considered even if that isn’t articulated.

I met the General Counsel of Amazon yesterday and in a talk he said he wouldn’t say where the new HQ would be, but the plan is to still announce “this year”.

“This year” is running out soon

To business people, “the year” often means fiscal year.

He meant calendar year.

I was in Dallas this weekeand and watched the local news, several past mayors met with the current mayor to discuss various issues, the only question off limits was Amazon!

Does anyone even want the headquarters anymore?

What I’ve heard is that they’re waiting until after the Midterms to make any announcements so they won’t get swept into the politics…and that rings true to me.

Funny,my first though way ‘but my kids’ mid-terms were last week’

Waiting until after the midterms could also be to make sure States/Local Govts can follow through with promises without the uncertainty of a new Governor or other top elected official.

a new article comparing the cities - https://www.recode.net/2018/10/15/17914666/amazon-hq2-contenders

Sorry…but you couldn’t pay me enough to have to live where I had to get on that Beltway. The worst driving in the country.

saw this also - who amazon has revisited - The visits over the past couple of months include New York City, Newark, N.J., and Chicago, according to people familiar with the matter. In addition, Amazon has been following up with other locations, including Miami and the Washington, D.C.-area, according to some of the people. Some cities, like Raleigh, N.C., haven’t heard from the retail giant in months, according to people familiar with the matter.

I don’t know if it’s “a game was over before it started”, but my feeling from the beginning is that the DC area has far and away the best chance, for reasons listed above, and others like Bezos’ ownership of the Washington Post. It might go to MD or VA suburbs of DC, rather than in DC itself, because the states can throw tax dollars at Amazon.

The reno project must be done by now…

I cannot imagine how any family, even one with a lot of kids, one that entertains frequently, etc., lives in 27,000 sq. feet.

I doubt it’s for “living”.

I never knew what to think of Amazon but now I am taking dislike of it. This “show” of selecting HQ2 is getting a bit too cute and Bezoes calling for higher federal minimum wage after they were paying so little to its own workers for many years. Is it a little too clever, too?

@twoinanddone Chicago will take it in a heartbeat. I think people might be underestimating the overall value it would have on their communities.

It’s freaking hotel size.

Yeah, private hotel for powerful guests. Jeff Bezoes is spending the most on political donations among CEOs.
