Not Tylenol , but another J&J product was missing from shelves two years ago that caused quite an uproar in USA and Canada…OB Tampons. It was crazy…selling on Ebay for extremely high prices. Our household felt the pain and we went to extraordinary lengths to get them. They were still being sold in Europe , so my husband brought them back to us ( and we still have enough to face the apocalypse )

It became quite a joke , though it wasn’t for women who were loyal to the product. No real explanation from J&J either…

I was looking to stock up on Tylenol Migraine and Tylenol Arthritis before I left the US last August - couldn’t find either, and the pharmacist gave me an explanation similar to what Nova10 said. Ended up with generic stuff - and that seems to be working fine.

This shows how much medication I take. I didn’t even realize this was an issue…

Actually I don’t take much in the way of acetaminophen at least. I do take some ibuprofen and cold medicine occasionally. But it’s something I should probably be aware of. While I don’t prescribe medicine, I do tell my athletes and their parents to “take Tylenol only for headaches” after a possible concussion. I wonder how many of them can put two and two together to realize Tylenol=acetaminophen…

Will have to try to remember that…

As has been already mentioned some generics are not the same as brand names and some people need the brand name or a specific generic. I have read of cases where pharmacies substituted generics for another generic and it resulted in side effects pts did not experience before. I work in a hospital and the standard order is now 650mg every 6hrs as opposed to the previous 1000mg every 6 hrs. my hospital has not seen a shortage of tylenol but we do get shortages of other very common and needed meds many times:iv lasix, iv ativan, iv morphine, iv dilaudid, iv benadryl, iv zofran, compazine. these are meds used all the time . the alleged shortages are attributed to decrease in manufacturing when a reason is given.

Hops scout, has a Dr examined these athletes? Are there a lot of possible concussions?

When I had a concussion a couple years ago, I think I was given at least two pain medications - I also didnt have a severe concussion as I wasn’t unconscious, but it was painful enough that I walked to the emergency room that evening since I was afraid to drive.
It did make me pretty foggy though.

I use generic for most Rxs, but I have also noticed that binders or what ever in some meds make my body react differently than with the brand name. Particularly when I changed from brand named Ritalin to methylphenidate, & not in a good way. But the differences between pharmacies generics made me wonder if they were getting them from different manufacturers.

speaking of Ritalin, there has been a recent shortage of ADD medication- Ive only had a little trouble as I now take something that isnt as popular, but it sounds pretty widespread.

Are the shortages drugs, that are manufactured in the US or in India/China?

[US drug shortages could continue for years : The Lancet](http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(12)60414-0/fulltext)

Ack- the browser trouble on my ipad has been taking too long to post.

Not every one of my athletes with a concussion gets sent to the doctor. I have seen approximately 10 concussions this fall so far I think.

But what our company’s protocols specify is we instruct our athletes and their parents to take Tylenol only for their headache when a concussion is suspected unless told otherwise by a doctor.

For those traveling, note that the generic names may be different in other places. For example:

acetaminophen = paracetamol

aspirin = acetylsalicylic acid = ASA (note that Aspirin in a trademarked brand name for this drug in some countries)

Everytime I’m in a store that sells health and beauty aids I look for Tylenol PM, Exedrin Migrane, and unflavored Reach waxed dental floss. If they have them, I buy several. The generics just don’t do it for me. Also, I can’t stand the new plastic dental floss, and the flavored versions get slimy as you use them.

There are 2 apps for the drug shortages. Sometimes I just want to tear out my hair. Buyers are almost becoming day traders. Watch

I take a prescription medication…a generic…and two years ago it became impossible to get. Then it became available in a different dosage which was fine…but still hard to get. My mail order RX stopped carrying this medication. I’ve changed insurance twice since and neither mail order RX will stock or dispense this med.

The shortage is apparently over as I’m easily able to get the RX at target.

The annoying thing was my specialist doctor had no idea about this med inavailability.
