Anyone have a Zoom-Room Murphy bed? And your thoughts on Murphy beds in general?

I have one at lakehouse. Contractor built a book shelf around the full-size murphy bed so that the bed looks well hidden. Be carefuly in selecting a handle that is used to pull the bud down. Purchase a handle that is wide enough to allow both hands are able to grab.

H and I have built a murphy for our guest room. we have used it for many guests (we pull it down and make it before they get there so it already looks like a bed. It’s a double and we have an ikea mattress on it. pretty comfortable actually. we used the “create a bed” hardware and a bunch of plywood/solid pine pieces. it’s painted white and has door slabs on the front so when it’s up people think it’s a closet at first.

Another issue is whether the wall you will be anchoring the bed to is tall, wide and strong enough. In our house, that is an issue, as we have tons of windows breaking up the walls.

We stayed at a Marriott hotel in Kauai where the bed was a Murphy bed which, when lowered, rested above a couch. The TV was on the wall across from the bed, so it could be watched both from the couch and the bed! Here is a photo:

I liked that setup.

That couch doesn’t look too comfortable! Where are the cushions? And theres no back to lean on?

The most interesting (and very pricey) Murphy bed systems I’ve seen come from Resource Furniture. www.resourcefurniture.com. There are a lot of videos on the website showing their creative and space-saving furniture.

“That couch doesn’t look too comfortable! Where are the cushions? And theres no back to lean on?”

Lol. The seat and back cushions are removed (as shown in the photo), and the bed unfolds over the sofa. It was perfectly fine to sit on. The design is a huge space saver, because the couch and the bed take up the same space. So if the cushions were in place, you would not even think there was a bed behind the couch! Confused Mr. B completely!

My friend put in a Murphy bed in office when she downsized in size, not price (bought ocean view). They have desks next to the bed and the whole wall is shelving. Looks great.

@fireandrain - that Resource Furniture is the bomb! Soooo expensive though. I’m not sure how available it is in the US. Europeans seem to have space-saving furniture down to an art, but I’d want a local dealer.

@bookworm - so, desks on either side of the bed? We wouldn’t have space for that.

The desks that fold down with the bed (where you don’t have to remove items from the desk) are super cool.

I had a Murphy bed in my first teeny tiny NYC studio apartment. I still laugh when I think about that apartment!! Anyway, the Murphy bed was a great space-saver and allowed me to have company without everyone feeling like they were sitting in my bedroom. FWIW I did put the bed up every day - it took just a few seconds.

I think it would work very well in that extra bedroom and allow you to utilize the room as you like and still have a bed when company does come. When you figure out what goes where in the room, just be sure to leave the area where the bed will come down clear of anything that would be difficult to move.

I have been looking at getting a Murphy bed for our home office. Some of the more stylish and affordable ones I’ve found have been on Costco.com. I don’t think they have Zoom Room model, though.
