Roshke - that is the site I used when originally researching. I should have remembered to post it. :o

Back when I got my first “new” bed it was a futon. I was a senior in college. I went to a store that specialized in Futon beds. It was similar to todays futons but with one exception. It also came with a cotton mattress that was about 3 or 4 inches thick. I also remember splurging and getting the handmade cotton comforter. The cotton mattress and comforter were made by a Japanese company. As of a few years ago we got rid of the cotton mattress. We still have the original futon foam bed. It is the not the type that fits on a bed it is 3 fold and you put it in the closet. My son’s friends love to sleep on it. I don’t know if you can still find higher quality futons. But the one we have even without the cotton mattress is still comfortable.

I’ve never slept on a comfortable futon. But I’ve had bad back problems for years. This seems to me to be one of the items that you just can’t cheap out on, at least if you have any kind of back problems.

My DD2 recently visited her sister at college and slept on the futon in the dorm room. She was sore for days afterwards (at least she complained for days anyway).

We have had several comfortable futons and I have slept on varying degrees of comfortable sofabeds–depends on the quality of the mattress & age, I believe.

Murphy beds, which hide into a closet on the wall are another space-saving option. There were available at Costco briefly.

We had a futon at one point in our living room for company. It was very comfortable - a thick queen size that we bought at a futon store.

I slept on it for a couple of weeks afeter I had older D ( I couldn’t do the stairs because of complications). I wouldn’t have minded using it all of the time.

D is looking to get a very basic futon for her dorm room, it would primarily be a sofa since they want to loft their beds, but it could occasionally be used for overnight guests. I found one for $179 online at Target, it says it has a 6 inch mattress and most of the other inexpensive (under $250) futons seem to have a 4 inch mattress. Anyone know anything about this one?
