Keep in mind that the word “cancel” probably came from some menu choice in some computer application the Admissions Office is forced to use.

Anyone know why a college would cancel you application after you tell them you've accepted elsewhere

Cancel means that if there was an active file in the financial aid office- it has been zeroed out. Cancel means that if your kid was in a queue for housing registration, he has been pulled from the line. Cancel means that nobody from your regional Adcom’s office is going to call the house and ask if he’s made a decision yet, and his invitation to the alumni barbecue in your area has been pulled from the pile.

How paranoid can you be? he’s not coming and they’ve now deactivated all the “touch points” that they would have activated had he responded that he’s coming. And it doesn’t impact “yield” one iota to “cancel” him in April vs. have him “decline” next week.
