2mch2sn and galwaymom~

Just checking to see how your sons are doing…

2mch2sn, how did your son do during the night? I hope that the pain meds are keeping his discomfort under control and that he (and you) were able to get some sleep. Update us if you can, ok?

galwaymom, hoping that your son is beginning to feel better…Many positive thoughts and prayers continuing for your family!

Hi Gang,

Read through the thread, laughed about the dogs. JHS, my hat is off to you because who can do to a house closing, leave a job and go on a college tour and come back with a dog each time as a lovely parting gift.

MOWC all the best on your upcoming surgery. I have every confidence that WC will lose his moniker and will either take the 5th or deny everything when he has kids.

Galawaymom, my prayers, good wishes and {{{{{{{BIG HUGS}}}}}} to you ane your son.

2mch2sn, hope that your son is feeling better.

Doubleplay, you were suppose to have a wonderful birthday, not do something to scare yourself. You deserve a do-over!! Hey, let’s just celebrate the rest of the month!!

omgosh about Pan’s Labyrinth. My husband and I were watching that movie the other night, and of course, I fell asleep in the first 10 minutes after deciding I hated the evil stepfather. The next morning, my husband was still walking around with a wide-eyed, shocked look on his face. We both honestly were expecting something HPish or LOTRish. I didn’t bother to try to watch the movie and sent it back…but I wondered if I was missing something good.

sybbie, that movie DID scare me! :frowning: I won’t dare watch SAW; my kids keep trying to get me to watch it, but just the trailer freaks me out.

I’m OK now!:)

berurah, Thanks for asking about my son. I spent the weekend running around shopping for nice soft foods, and cooking the foods, and reminding him to take his medicines…anyway I am tired but he seems OK. Pain and swelling on one side got a bit worse today, but he has not had to resort to the heavy-duty painkillers so far. Motrin seems to be making it bearable. He finished the Harry Potter book, so that helped take his mind off of things. For those freaked out by Pan’s Labyrinth, add me to the club. I ended up taking off my glasses and glancing through a magazine so I just heard some of the more upsetting parts. I did not want to have the images in my head. My son thinks I’m strange because when I bought the Harry Potter book, I read the epilogue before I gave him the book. I wanted to know if the ending would be upsetting BEFORE I decided whether to read it. I find I really have to prepare myself to deal with scenes in books or movies that involve violence or death. In some ways I prefer good old-fashioned murder mysteries because I know what’s coming, and usually that the villain will be caught!! Of course, I often prefer the mysteries set in the picturesque English countryside without too much graphic description of the crime.

2mch2sn~

I was actually just thinking about your son this evening, so I’m really glad that you updated. I’m relieved to hear that his recovery seems to be going well. My kids had quite a bit of swelling also, and my son’s was worse on one side than the other too. It sounds, though, like he’s managing the pain well since regular Motrin seems to be doing the trick. I think that both of my kids took stronger meds in the first couple of days.

I’m sure you’re exhausted! You’ve been SUCH a good mom, making sure that your son is comfortable and able to have the right things to eat. When he’s better, you deserve a nice break!

Things should really start to improve from here on out! Hang in there! :)

It’s funny…I used to be able to watch the scary and distrubing type things before I had kids. Now, I find that those things bother me much more than they did back then. I do love well-crafted suspense movies, but not the ones with gratuitous violence and gore.

How did your son like the HP book?

~berurah

Our S, the aspiring filmmaker, thinks Pan’s Labyrinth is the best movie ever. He is writing one of his college essays on it. He’s already done the rough draft. He says, “When you make the effort to see the metaphor in every instance of the fantasy world then you begin to understand the mind of Ofelia and her entire world.”

Metaphor? Whatever. I was so busy being horrified, I was hardly paying attention to any metaphors! And honestly, what little girl would stay to talk when she got a look at that horrible-looking Pan creature? Even the fairies were scary looking. Oh! And how about when that mummy bit off the fairy’s head?!?!

timely~

It seems that your son has a wonderfully creative mind! What better a person to be an aspiring filmmaker? Hope all his dreams come true! :)

~berurah

timely, I had forgotten that part about biting off the fairies heads – until NOW! LOL. Goodnight. Sweet Dreams!

This was pretty clever!

Chihuahua smart enough to pee in the shower? PRICELESS!

I saw a lady on Friday who had a flat of growing grass in the car. I thought that maybe she made her own smoothies using grass (well, this is California). But she told me that she lived in an apartment and she put the patch of grass on the balcony and her little chihuahua would use the bathroom on the little patch of grass. Smart dog! Considerate owner.

I have owned one dachshund (a red mini) and I have to say that the dog had one of the cutest faces ever, but was as dumb as the day is long (in the summer). Great personality, though…tried to train him once to run in the UC Davis Dachshund races, but he couldn’t keep his focus.

Anyone see the news item today on Comcast about a chihuahua that saved a baby from a rattlesnake? – First thing I thought of when I saw that was this thread.

Goodnight again. For real this time. Maybe.

Today momofwildchild is having surgery. Lets all send her our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

MOWC,
Hope the surgery and the recovery goes smoothly!

An update on my son- thanks for asking, berurah!

He has taken full ownership of his disease, and is literally gagging down 56 ounces of this elemental liquid diet during the day, and handling a nighttime tube as well.
I am so proud of him! He ventured out to the movies (that undoubtedly dumb Adam Sandler movie made for teenage boys) with friends last evening, and I picked him up outside the local burger joint afterwards. He said he was glad he got that milestone over with, since he was a bit concerned about how he would handle all of his buddies chomping down food, and he with his bottled water. It was fine.

I wish I had a chihuahua story, but I have lots of stories of our crazy terrier- for another time! Thanks, all! Another catharsis for me!

Best wishes to MOWC; speedy recovery!

Good vibes to you MoWC!! Praying for you, a recovery as painless and speed as possible!!

I can totally see my little chihuahua going after a rattlesnake!! She is a ‘bite first and ask questions later’ sort of girl (just when it comes to protecting family). And I love the flat of grass story! That could actually come in very handy for road trips when all you can find is concrete!

galway - good for your son…he sounds very brave and mature. I can’t imagine either of mine dealing with a night tube or diet restrictions as well. And bring us your terrier stories when you have time!!

timely - fairies get their heads bitten off??? I am officially glad I sent it back then! But, my d and her boyfriend, who are real movie buffs (snobs  ) thought it was a great film as well.

re: oral surgery (this is evolving into the doggie thread/oral surgery thread…lol!!) My son has surgery scheduled for next week. He is not having wisdom teeth removed, rather 12 baby teeth that have wrapped their roots around his fully developed adult teeth. He is just a very late bloomer they tell me. Though there will be pain and swelling, it shouldn’t be as bad as that of a more drastic wisdom teeth surgery. But because of the sheer number of teeth and the time involved (apparently it is delicate work trying to remove the teeth without breaking off the roots), he will have either IV sedation or general anesthesia, so that he won’t mind being in the chair for the long haul. I think we are going with the IV, though they offered the other…I really hope we are making the right decision. Our main complication will be the period of time where he as very few teeth in his head. I’ll have to come up with some innovative meals for him for awhile.

Poor kid, THEN he has a followup with his orthopedic surgeon. When he was an infant, he was born with a twisted foot that required several surgeries. (9 lb baby transverse breach during pregnancy caused the malformation). The surgeries to repair took place between 6 months and 1 year of age. All had been well until he started marching practice and now there is tremendous swelling and pain in the area of the surgery. He has always had restricted range of motion due to the surgery and they warned us later surgeries may be necessary as he gets older. I really hope not…he will be a freshman and all he wants is to march with the band like the other kids. Surgery would really put an end to that for this season.

Lots of even worse stuff than fairies getting their heads bit off.
The worse scene for me- more psychologically disturbing than anything else- was the scene where the sick stepdad makes the stutterer count to three to save his life. THAT kept playing in my head over and over; I could not go to sleep that night!
