Anyone Receive Meaningful Need Based Aid From a Public?

my S20 just received an achievement scholarship from U of Arizona after we sent in the FAFSA. This award is EFC based. . . . and not guaranteed for 4 years if EFC rises above a pretty generous number. He has a sibling in college two of the four years; so scholarship is good for at least 2 years. It was a very pleasant surprise actually. (he has a nice merit auto scholarship from them as well; no idea if the two are dependent or not).

Michigan has been known to give OOS FA through their Michigan grant between like $20,000-35,000. That’s from just seeing reports on this thread. We also received a meaningful amount. No other OOS school gave us anything but merit like Michigan State gave their OOS half scholarship (instate tuition for OOS) plus other awards in a package. But this was for their honors program. That made MSU like $30,000/year OOS if I remember plus perks. Many schools depending on your program of interest give like half scholarships but these are merit based.

Our state (MN) has a very good grant program and the University of Minnesota has a need based scholarship program…but it’s all only for residents. Getting out of state need-based would be a lot harder I would think, but Iowa State did give us a 6K/year grant. This is on top of the merit scholarship. It brings the cost down to about the same as in-state.
