Interesting concept. I think I will try it! Being more mindful is a great idea.
Some of my meals are harder to “enjoy” than others…like all things in life!
You made me laugh out loud sabaray! :))
I think I need to carry with me a list of useful tips that help, but don’t make me suffer and require tons of willpower. I just won’t stick to it for long, I know I’m weak. I am a “live to eat” person, not an “eat to live”. Right now I’m on a 10 day trip, to places where there is really good food, and I know where it is. I’m trying to buy fruits and vegetables from local stores, but the hash browns are calling out to me. And tomorrow, the particularly good omelet. So many times you don’t know what is really in restaurant food, even if you think you can pick out the ingredients.
I recently was on an intense running program, and actually gained weight, even though I wasn’t eating much more. I know they say muscle weighs more than fat, but it looked to me like there was more muscle, underneath the same fat. I have ten pounds of body fat that has been clinging to me for dear life. Now I’ve found out that I’m starting to go through menopause, which will make it worse. The weight number is fine, but that body fat…it is so hard for me to maintain anything with regularity. It is easy to fall back into your bad habits when you travel, are stressed out, busy, or something bad happens in your life… So many excuses, so little time.
Maybe someone should start a thread about tricks for weight loss (or body fat loss in my case), that don’t suck the life out of you!
It helps me to have things that are really tasty. Those 90 calorie tuna pouches that have the different strong seasonings are really good. You actually feel like you’ve eaten something! My big weakness is office eating. If someone brings good donuts, I go into this mindset that it could be the last donut I’ll ever see in my life, so I better have several!
One key to vacation and “travel to good food places” eating is to get out of the above mindset and enjoy normal amounts without trying to shove it all in like it’s your last meal ever!

steak, greens, and martinis - only kidding a little
Steak, greens, and red wine works for me. Big breakfasts, too. I have not done any meaningful running in a year due to health issues (which I am working on as we speak), but my entire wardrobe still fits just fine - having a few designer duds carefully assembled from sales keeps me motivated to keep fitting into them. I will need to drop 3-5 lb though to get into my prime racing weight.
I know a person who carries chopsticks and whips them out at meals. The reasoning? Being a poor chopsticks user, they can’t shovel their meal into their mouth in one big gulp.

I can go for the steaks and greens, but martini’s-yuck. Could red wine substitute?
I have to figure out something I like that is filling, low calorie, and really tasty. My company keeps supplying us with cans of this lemon pepper tuna, which even the thought of is disgusting to me! Maybe I should give them a try. Pretty good with donuts, because I realize that I can’t even have the first bite, or I’m lost.
After awhile, you’d think the person would become a good chopsticks user. I guess that dieting trick has a limited time frame.
Some people do not have the greatest dexterity
Actually, that trick would work to retrain the person into slowing down and finding the optimum meal pace.
I adore red wine, but have difficulty limiting myself to one glass. I also adore martinis, but never want two. Martini quality can vary. They are not yuck with excellent gin and vermouth and olives. imho. I am never hungry after my evening martini. I’m good till morning. Then a big breakfast, like BB. As I age it is most comfortable for me to have a big breakfast, no lunch, very early dinner. Beyond weight control, I just sleep better and my stomach doesn’t hurt.
Maybe I should try a good martini. One glass of wine is hard to stop at.
If I had to use chopsticks, I’d starve to death!
Mr. B and I occasionally buy half bottles. 2 glasses in each - easy portion control. Other times, we have guests. 1 bottle, 2 couples, 4 glasses. Works well.
In Carmel CA right now about to head to sunny Carmel Valley to two different vineyards for wine tastings. No intention whatsoever of spitting it out. ![]()
Meant to type “people do quite well WITHOUT breakfast, others need it.”
We got it, @Nrdsb4
The dangerous downside of wine and other alcohol is not the calories in the wine. Alcohol releases inhibitons, and people tend to reach for munchies to go with the wine (or martinis).
Not here to get anyone’s dander up, but maybe drinking alcohol isn’t the best drink to have when trying to achieve weight loss. “Just saying.” X_X
Totally! Water is cheap and hydrating.
And has no caloric burden.
My mom always jokes that her martini loving friends don’t eat. Except for the olives.
No argument from me, @sushiritto!
