@iusedtobesmart I am not familiar with the PSAT 8/9 to offer that comparison.
@417WHB It is an odd schedule to me. Though they have massive facilities so the staggering is not much of an issue and Wednesdays are half days for weekday games. I just think all students, day or not, would have a hard, hard, time going outside BS for a 2nd sport.
But many soccer players do just that, at most (all?) boarding schools.
Some day students, sure. I think (often) that is campus dependent. If you are at Andover in Boston’s suburbia with many high level clubs within an hour, yes. If you are out in rural NE campus probably not so much. For my DS it would literally be impossible with the school winter schedule and top soccer clubs go year round. I am sure many others it is doable.
@PrepDad2018 actually boarding kids at the rural schools play club soccer too. A handful play for "regular " clubs/DA; many play for the Prep Academy arm of Black Rock, which fits around the boarding schedule and also provides most needed transportation.
I think there are different definitions of ‘playing club’. Most if not all of our soccer kids do some sort of soccer on weekends in the off season, pretty much every Sunday in any event, sometimes they leave for the whole weekend for tournaments etc. There are only 1 or 2 I know of who go to the weeknight practices, and even that is just when they can (apparently the nearby clubs practice 3 nights a week). They do seem to supplement with scrimmaging on campus, I see them under the lights on Wednesdays even in near freezing temps this time of the year.
OP, your daughter will have to adjust time commitments with sports, school and activities. I agree with some posters. Doing a club sport can crowd out other things. Having a kid who has zero time to make connections, do activities and study will be very overwhelming. The transition from middle school student who excels in multiple areas to high school kid who excels in multiple areas isn’t a straight line. Most kids have to choose what’s most important to them.
BS are infinity more difficult that that great public/day school your kid attended. And even if your kid can do many things at once, they might learn that they need to give something up in order to do things well.
BTW, not all club teams are the same. Some are not very competitive and others are very time intensive and competitive. It also depends on the sport. My kid did club team on Sundays with tournaments and other practices until my kid realized they really didn’t want to spend so much time on this sport. Kid had a lot going on and also wanted to get the social aspect of being at BS. Your kid will have to choose what they like best.
@Happytimes2001 , thanks for your reply. My daughter will have a lot to consider. I am not sure she will be ready to give up club soccer, but maybe she will. Or maybe she won’t and will decide on public HS. I think for now she’ll just keep forging ahead to try to submit the strongest application possible and take it from there, if admitted.
Back to your original question… keep doing what you’re doing. Plan to take the SSAT this summer so there’s time for prep if you need it. And you may want to consider taping games so you have something to share with coaches.
She sounds like a strong applicant.
@NEMama We always just aimed to give our kids options. Once you have actual acceptances you can make decisions. We began the process by just seeing what educational options were available other than public school.
