What is the typical sequence at your school? What are the required science classes for graduation?
FWIW, ar our high school the typical progression would be:
9th - Earth Science (all students must take this to graduate)
10th - Biology
11th - Chemistry
12th - Physics (or Environmental Science, or other science elective.)
Yes, my schedule has only 6 periods but some classes are offered 7th or 0 period. None of the classes I listed are offered for 7 or 0 periods. I am going to be taking regular chemistry during the summer. My initial plan for the rest of high school includes:
Sophmore Year:
AP Bio or Chem (If I take chemistry during the summer, which I am doing, I am eligible to take either of these, I am going more towards AP bio because I am more interested in bio than chem. But overall, Science is my favorite subject alongside math)
AP euro
AP Comp Sci Pri
English 9 Honors
Integrated Math II Honors
Spanish 2
Summer: US History
Junior Year:
AP Chem
AP Physics 1
AP English Language
Integrated Math 3 Honors or AP Pre-Calc(Which will better prepare me for AP calc BC?)
AP Comp Sci A
Spanish 3
Summer: Online Art class to fill in my art requirement(I live in California so it is a requirement) PE can be taken during the summer so that is what I intend to do.
Senior:
AP Physics C: Mechanics
AP English Language
AP US Government/Macroeconomics (These are both semester classes)
AP Spanish Language
AP Calc BC (The requirement is integrated math III honors or AP pre-calc)
Anatomy and Physiology
2 AP sciences together when one is AP Chemistry which is reqlly, really hard is not a good idea. Iām not sure itās even possible since many AP science classes have double periods some days due to labs.
Why do you want to take Physics C (which requires some knowledge of calculus and is relevant for future Engineering majors) while taking BC concurrently?
A better move would be AP physics 1 in 11th, AP Chem in 12th.
(No one would expect you to take AP Physics C when you started in Integrated Math 1 in 9th. College app evaluations are always in context.)
However you WILL be expected to take Calc BC if your school offers it after Math III Honors or AP precalculus.
I was thinking of AP chemistry with Physics Honors. Is this doable considering the rest of my schedule? The one subject that I wanted to take all AP of was science. Anything science interests me especially astronomy.
But no specific science? (Earth science is required where I live, plus one lab science, then you can fill the remainder of your science requirements with whatever science you would like.)
I agree that 4 years of science is best, even though you are only required to take two or three
Iāll be honest, this sounds really ambitious. Perhaps take it year-by-year, and be flexible, depending on how things are going. Donāt get too caught up in āmust attend a T20ā because there are students with perfect straight Aās four years, all the APās etc. that arenāt accepted. Itās something you canāt count on, and canāt let yourself feel like itās the only positive outcome
Based on your schoolās recommended sequence and since youāve taken Honors Bio already, why not follow with AP Chem as a sophomore, and then if that goes well, AP Physics junior year.
I know that I am unlikely to get into a T20 school, but I have always wanted to. But I understand what you are saying. I know many great schools are out there and it doesnāt have to be a T20 school. I know I will succeed wherever I go.
Iām curious about the reason for the summer courses. It seems you are planning to take both chemistry and US history over the summer. Is this necessary? Who advised you to do this? I think you would be much better off to take them during the school year.
I am planning chemistry between my freshman and sophomore years and US history between my sophomore and junior years. I have to do this because if I donāt I have to get rid of AP computer science principles and a.
I donāt agree with the idea of taking two core courses over the summer so that you can take two electives during the school year. Did someone advise this or did you come up with it on your own? In my opinion, this is not a good way to go.
I came up with it myself, the reason for taking chemistry during the summer is so that I can take ap bio. I find computer science a lot more interesting than us history.
