AP English score

Every year, after AP scores are released, there are many posts on CC from disappointed parents and students. It’s not just a one year phenomenon, where smart kids get one or more low AP scores.

No petitions from my rising senior.

Petition, if you must, but I’d be ready to quickly move on.

@sushiritto in the past teachers did not see the responses. This is the first time the College Board has allowed them access. In this case, her teacher has seen hers and all his other students’ essays in his classes (I think he has about 80 students) so he can see the inconsistency in scoring. It was his idea to petition.

As other posters have said, his petition will be rejected. It’s time to move on. A 3 isn’t a bad score, it’s actually very good. And even if by some miracle they do accept the petition, I highly doubt that the experience of your daughter’s single teacher will outweigh the opinions of multiple experienced CB-trained teachers who actually graded the essay. There are amazing universities that do take 3s, and the universities that don’t, probably won’t waive freshman English requirements anyway.

@RockyPA He’s human and he brings his own set of biases to the review. His method of review may be entirely different than the CB. Here’s the scoring rubric. I assume her teacher has scored her essay a 5 based on these guidelines.

Petition if you must, but I’d personally accept it and move on.

He is basing his assessments on the grading rubric and has plenty of students that scored 4s and 5s and cannot understand her score, since he deemed her essay quality better than almost all of them. Anyways will see what happens. She has a lot of other great scores, grades etc so this really shouldn’t affect her college admissions. Just super frustrating for her and shocking for her teacher who is a very experienced AP Lang teacher from a highly regarded HS.

Wow, so much entitlement.

@Muad_dib ”entitlement”? Whatever, done posting here.

This EXACT same thing happened to me. It’s particularly stressful because I want to major in English and getting a 2 on the AP Lit is not only not representative of my writing ability but also frankly, just plain embarrassing. But worst of all, I want to apply to schools abroad which won’t even allow you to apply unless you have a score of at least a 4 on the AP tests in your course. I took this AP test on my own (my school doesn’t have AP courses), so I’m not sure how I can refute my score. I’m absolutely devastated because without a re-grade many of my prospects in the UK (which I’m really excited about) are completely wiped out. I’m determined to get my essay re-graded. These threads have been a great source of encouragement! It’s nice to know I’m not the only one experiencing this.

Even with a regrade, the likelihood of going from a 2 to a 4 is zero. If you cannot get hold of the teacher or you have no teachsr, telephone AP Services. They will log the complaint, research it, and update you in August.
