Earnest Hemmingway was an author during the the same time period of F. Scott Fitzgerald. They, like the transcendentalists criticized the government and world for being too materialistic. Nevertheless, the transcendalists began their movement decades prior on Brook Farm.

1.Who was Lemonade Lucy?

no idea

not sure which president, but it was during the late 1800s when there was a response to the out of control growth of big industry, in this case railroad, by the farmers, who were discontent cuz the gov wasn’t regulating prices and conduct of the railroads. It set up the ICC, but it wasn’t really that helpful until the progressive era when it was given more power

supreme court upheld the power of the gov to regulate private industries…another response to the grange mvment.

what was the ocala platform?

what were the insular cases?

what was the platt amendment and what effect did it have on Cuba?

1.Ocala platform: populist platform that stipulated the destruction of national banks, lower wages, free silver, the whole nine yards.
2.Insular Cases:not sure, I have to review the spanish american war. BUT! I’m pretty sure it dealt with the neccesity/purpose of becoming involved with puerto rico and the phillipines; we basically had no right to do so.

3.The Platt Amendment:US would with withdraw troops from Cuba. It liberated Cuba basically.

1.Describe the Anthracite Coal Site ordeal.
2.Schenk v. The United States.

Oh dear, I don’t remember those. But here’s an easy one: The Republican party originated in the mid-1850’s as a sectional party committed to what?

The Republican Party was an outgrowth of the Free Soil party, who basically wanted to just “quarantine” slavery, or how Marshall said during the cold war–“contain” slavery.

1.Describe the Anthracite Coal Site ordeal.
2.Schenk v. The United States.
I didn’t think they were that difficult. If no one answers it, I will if you want.

Teddy Roosevelt acted on the beliefs of the Square Deal and favored the strikers against the mine bc they refused to compromise

During WWI, upheld constitutionality of the sedition and espionage act…also declared that First Amendment rights can be limited if it causes “clear and present danger”

for the Platt Amendment, Cuba was granted independence but the U.S. basically had control of its foreign policy. IT made Cuba a protectorate.

Insular cases declared that the inhabitants of U.S. overseas territories do not have the same rights as U.S. citizens and the power to grant such rights resided in Congress

What was the Lodge Corollary?

Describe the Kansas-Nebraska Act and its impact

How did relations between U.S. and Britain ease up in the early 19th century

Lodge Corllary was proposed by Senatory Henry Lodge. He was really pssed of that he didn’t get to go to Paris. He made a corollary stating 14 reasons not to join the League of Nation. It mainly said that US had to give up certain freedom and sovereignty to become part of it. It was never passed because Wilson’s spokesman ( Wilson had a stroke) told the Democrats to vote it down. However, the Treaty of Versailles with or without the corollary was never passed, and the war ended with a joint-resolution.
2.Greedy Stephen A. Douglas wanted the railroad to start in Chicago so he could earn a lot of money. To gain the votes of the Southern senators he proposed the KN act. It said that the Nebraska territory would be divided into KS and NE. Each would decide slavery by popular sovereignty. Douglas implied that since KS is next to MO it will probably become a slave state, and gained the votes of the Southern senators.
The act was against the Missouri Compromise. It led to ‘Bloody Kansas’ and the SOutherners were even more pssed than ever before because they didn’t gain any slave territory. Also after this, Republican party started to back up candidates for the Senate and White House. Lincoln was backed for 1858 senator election.
3. Britain was fighting a war with France. They impressed American ships, and fought the War of 1812. However, the Czar of Russia urged Britain to end the war early so that Britain could focuse on defeating Napoleon. At Ghent Britain, Russia and US met and signed the Treaty of Ghent. The relation basically eased up not because of America’s strength, but because Britain was too busy dealing with France. Also during Tyler’s Presidency Webster settled with Lord Ashburton the borderline of Maine which was disputed quite often. They were able to come to an easy conclusion. During Polk’s presidency, there was a fight for the Oregon Territory. However, the US and Britain divided up the Oregon Territory avoided a war.

Truman in particular was sought to be weak on Communism. Nevertheless, he followed through on his Truman Doctrine (Greece and Turkey didn’t fall to communism), but George Marshall’s idea of containment failed when Russia’s satellities grew, when china fell to communism under Mao De Zedong, when northern vietnam became lured by the prospect, and other countries as well. Communism so to speak was a pandemic at that point.

1.Who was Chief Joseph?
2.Commonwealth V. Hunt.

The United States, time and time again has proven to stand behind the flag; particulary with the war of 1812 and the War Hawks and the sinking of the Lusitania by German ships (schenk and his disciples were an exception). The first world war demonstrated our want to go to war to seek animus, or revenge. The US, a growing super power was smacked in the face after the German sinking, not to mention the zimmerman note, which threatened the United States even more. In contrast, the second world war saw to follow in the footsteps of George Washington and his isolationist policy. We wouldn’t become active until pearl harbor. Under FDR, we enacted the Lend Lease ACt and the Cash and Cary system, but were reluctant to go to war. Finally, Pearl Harbor did come. France had fallen, and Britain was on the verge of destruction; our admittance into the war was compulsory.

Commonwealth v Hunt made labor unions and strikes legal…i just reviewed my supreme court cases today Also got a 670 on a practice SATII but I figure that’s good for this point in the game.

Pancho Villa (who hated US cuz we didnt help him get the presidecny of MExico) raided village(s) in New Mexico during the Spanish American War, killing many. Wilson ordered Pershing to pursue him into Mexico. Didn’t work, mexico got ****ed, and we backed out. This was during Truman’s presidency.

What did ever happen with the decision of slavery in Kansas and Nebraska? Like, I knoew all about the corrupt elections, constitutions, but what was the final say?
