Appeal of theme parks as an adult?

Sometimes, filming and cameras are just distracting. Honest reaction is priceless and is forever recorded in the memories of those present.

I remember being disappointed with Epcot. To us it seemed “fake”. We live in the northern Midwest so it would likely be not much more expensive to just fly to Europe and see the real thing. Might be less expensive.

Epcot was OK but not a must repeat for us. We were happy we got to try to French restaurant that I had read was the best of the bunch, plus got to go on a few rides. If we hadn’t gone to any of the parks while so close to them, I would have regretted missing the opportunity. I have no burning desire to return but perhaps with kids.

I loved Epcot, even though we had visited most of the “countries” by then. We liked the street performances and the fun vibe, which had an interesting, adventurous, and exotic feel compared to the saccharine of the Magic Kingdom. I do like MK though.

Our kids got a kick out of the Kim Possible scavenger hunt (which I think is gone now). Hubby and I enjoyed having a glass of champagne in France. We all loved Japan and Morocco. We had dinner at a fabulous restaurant in Morocco and as we ate and chatted, the four of us decided Morocco was a place we should visit. A few years later, we did just that and had a fantastic time. My daughter became intrigued with Japan and ended up studying abroad there. I am not sure we would have gone to those places if we hadn’t been to Epcot first.

Who is the “she” you are referring to? I think I’m missing something?

Lol. Yeah I guess it doesn’t make sense. My friend I met at music camp one summer was in the background of pictures I had taken the year prior before I knew her. We lived over 200 miles apart but happened to be in Orlando at the same time

Flights to Orlando are cheap but Disney is expensive.

I keep reading that it’s cheaper to fly to Europe to ski than it is to ski out west considering the price of lodging and lift tickets

So maybe it would be the same. More expensive to fly but cheaper once you get there.

Depends where you live. I am a 1.5 hr flight to Tahoe, 2.5 hr to Denver, five hours to Orlando, and 11 hours flight from Europe.

Disney doesn’t need to be expensive. When we go to Disney World, we stay at an off site rental for a fraction of the price of a Disney hotel. It is nice to have a kitchen, laundry, and quiet place to come home to at the end of a long day.

Unless it’s spring break! D20 was planning to go to FL for spring break. They were going to stay with the father of one of her roommates. They weren’t going to Disney but would have flown into Orlando. From Chicago, it was close to $400. I jokingly said to her, “for a couple of hundred dollars more you could go to Europe.” So she did! She and her roommate just got back from a week in Ireland last night.

To keep this on topic, we were/are not a Disney family at all. However, when I was about 13, we went to visit a family friend in FL for Thanksgiving who lived near Orlando. The Epcot Center had just opened like a month or two prior. My parents decided to take us there and to Magic Kingdom. We all loved Epcot but I remember, as a family who loved roller coasters, we were all kind of bored with MK. As teenagers, we were all too old for the “princessy stuff” and had more fun at the nearby waterpark we went to the next day.

I am not a fan of super big scary rides, but would love to go back to Disneyworld at some point. The rides there are my speed - fun but not super scary. Haven’t been in a long time as my kids are too old. We only went a couple of times with them as kids - and once to Disneyland (my first time ever in my 40s).

To be clear, I am not someone that wants to go to Disney every year or two, but a theme park can be a nice escape for a day or so. And Disney does it well (and you pay for that!).

We have also been to many national parks and other outdoor trips, along with city trips. But a nice theme park is just something of a mindless escape to me.
