Appetizers and side dishes, 2024 version

I don’t know the term “funeral sandwich” or “party sandwich”, but we have them sometimes. Pinwheel sandwich-like finger food is popular.

I like Sam’s mini croissants for making small sandwiches for a crowd. (One time I just brought some along some sliced mini croissants, let people make their own cheese sandwich from the Sam’s cheese tray assortment.)

As Jews, Since we definitely don’t have ham at our meals I was trying to think what sort of sandwiches I might see at a funeral meal ( which is a shiva). Then I realized. It would be make your own bagels lox and cream cheese “ sandwiches” ( we don’t call them that). The norm is big trays of lox amd smoked fish as well as onion tomato and cucumber with baskets of bagels and bowls of cream cheese.

I have had something very similar to what people are calling funeral sandwiches which were made with pastrami and corned beef, with toppings - but I can’t remember what toppings.

I would like to make some funeral sandwiches ahead of time and freeze them. What’s your process? Do you assemble the ham, cheese, and Hawaiian rolls, then put them back in the original package to freeze? Do you thaw them completely before topping with the butter and sugar mixture, or bake them straight from the freezer? Any tips would be appreciated!

It’s rare for either of those to have a topping other than mustard so I can’t imagine what it could be. I mean there’s a Reuben but we don’t eat those typically at a shiva since they are definitely not kosher.

My H loves this recipe for cranberry sauce and makes sure we have it every Thanksgiving. I think it’s fine, but most of the family doesn’t really like it.

My wife recently made some for a party; and we froze the leftovers (which were ready to eat, with topping included). Heating them up in the microwave worked just fine for us.

Thanks. I’m going to give it a try. It’s something I never thought of freezing, but it would be nice to have on hand.

had not heard term “funeral sandwiches” before…we just called them sliders.
Great for parties…and make aheads…
