Thanks ASAP. I appreciate the suggestion.

There is also insurance you can purchase specifically for electronics such as laptops – one such company is Safeware. I believe it covers theft, damage from liquids, breakage due to falls, etc. There is no deductible for the college plan and cost was less than $100 for $1500 worth of coverage --covers repair or replacement. I just purchased it for my son’s Macbook pro. While I might be able to insure it cheaper on my homeowner’s policy, as others have said there’s no way I’d take the chance on filing a relatively small claim.

While this doesn’t help with computers that just decide to go over to the dark side - for damage or loss, we just got this for D.
Filing a Claim;
On another thread several parents said they had bought it - however nobody had the bad fortune to have made a claim, so no CC experience there. It covers accidental damage as well as theft or fire. Our homeowner’s policy has a very high deductable in order to be affordable, so this seemed worth it. Also comes with “phone home” software that can help track a stolen laptop.

How did I not know about these? I thought all of the kids toys (instruments, bikes, computers, etc)could only be covered by home owner’s insurance.

Luckily, nothing has been lost or stolen so far, though one son’s dorm room was broken into and his roomies mac was stolen. Can you believe the school made the kids pay for the broken lock?

Thanks momo3 and dragonsmom!

We’re using CSI (www.collegestudentsinsurance.com).

$122/year
$5000 coverage
$100 deductible

Student’s laptop survived dorm life, internship in exotic country, travel, year abroad, and then was promptly stolen within a week of moving into off campus housing.

We filed a claim and it looks like she’ll get replacement cost. The laptop was 3.5 years-old, so she’ll end up with more powerful computer but she’s lost all those digital doo-dads that had accummulated. Back up those pictures! I learned, too, that policyholders can download a security tracking software that is supposed to aid in recovery for free. We’ll certainly add that to the new laptop.

It was very helpful to still have the original receipts. So far, so good.
