Appliance extended warranties - good deal or not?

With built-in fridges, it totally makes sense to rebuild the guts. Filling the space with a new box could be a challenge of its own!

In the old days I never bought an extended warranty - I considered them scams. Appliances seemed to last forever.

Nowadays… on the other hand, appliances are junk, when they break it is often a “circuit board” of some kind that is very expensive to replace (and impossible to reprair), and I wouldn’t be without an extended warranty on my major appliances.

We had regular problems with our dishwasher over the past SEVEN years. Most recently, the first repair worked for 1 day, the 2nd repair worked for 2 days, and when the 3rd repair didn’t work… they bought us a new dishwasher! I know, I couldn’t believe it. We paid $150 delivery and installation charge and they gave us a new dishwasher that was a slight upgrade from the old one.

We just bought a Samsung smart TV for about $480, and the store (Abt) offers a three year extended warranty plan for $40. It’s a nationwide company called SquareTrade and we have 30 days after purchase to add it. We normally never have done extended warranties because we feel manufacturing defects will happen in the first year (if not the first month). But this plan seems maybe worth it. Has anyone dealt with this company?

Marilyn, I have 3 Samsung Smart TVs and love them. Two are 4 years old and one is 2 years old. My credit card company doubled the one year warranty so we got 2 years on each. I personally don’t think you need to spend the 40 bucks, for the reason you stated,

Edit: Squaretrade has some very negative reviews on Yelp however I have not personally dealt with them.

We used to have terrific luck with the appliances we bought 25 years ago. They’d run forever with nary a problem. But the ones we’ve bought in the last ~10 years (especially dishwashers) are anything but trouble-free long term purchases.

When our last dishwasher broke down, we had a repairman out and he said it would cost as much as it was worth to fix it. He advised not to spend more than about $400 on a new one, and to skip the fancy stuff. He said that anymore, 4 years is the max you can expect to get out of a dishwasher, and that’s been our experience.

We did get the extended warranty with the new one, specifically for the preventive maintenance. We’re hoping that if it gets an annual checkup, it’ll last longer. I’m also following the letter of the law on rinsing filters and running the dishwasher-cleaner monthly.
