Applied Math at UT? How hard is OOS admission?

Igielsks:
Hi, my son also loves math. He was accepted into Computer Science (2nd choice) instead of Math (1st choice) and the advisors all say that double majoring is a snap and he could switch from CS to any Math major if he wanted. The CS program at UT is very math focused, heavy emphasis on logic and problem solving. You might want to explore CS. UT CS is in the top 10 (7 or 8, I think). And, their job placement, even for internships is crazy good. Just another option …

And whatever you do, apply for honors for that program. I think that says that you are willing to do more than the minimum. Might be an edge to getting into UT.

Yeah now that you mention it that Specialization in Scientific Computing option sounds awesome. Unforunately, I currently have little to no knowledge in programming right now and all I will know come college is what I will learn in AP Comp Sci next year. How bad would this hurt me?

Igielsks, my son had no programming in HS, either, and he found his EE computing classes very challenging this year. He dropped one in the spring. He is taking C++ at Austin Community College this summer, and learning Matlab on his own. But if you’re taking AP Computer Science, that should help, I would think.

So, I am not set as of now but still thinking of applied math or mathematical science of statistics probability and data. Any comments on either the former or the latter? Computer science seems to be too daunting of a task with my little programming knowledge and it just seems like one of those majors you have to be perfect for but I will reasses that as I take AP CS. However, I am very interested to hear of any other math based majors be them a type of engineering or something else.

I just found out that Newsweek ranked my highschool as the 221st best in the nation. The rankings were based on test scores, gpa, and course difficulty among other things. I feel like this would help my admission greatly since my rank is one of my weekest aspects. Any thoughts?
