My older son was interested in auditioned BFA programs. Most people thought he applied to too few (6 auditioned programs, plus three non-audition BA colleges). Aspiring performing arts majors often apply to more than twenty colleges, because the process can be so unpredictable. The scenario has changed since I had to hand-write all my applications, then bring them along with stamped envelopes and checks for my school’s registrar to enclose my transcripts. If the OP’s parents are willing to pay all the application fees, then there is no reason for him not to apply to all the UCs. The UCs do not offer Early Decision, and the applications have to be submitted in November. It makes sense that a student hoping for Berkeley or UCLA, but willing to settle for Santa Cruz or Irvine, would apply to all of them. My younger son applied to some enormous public universities and some tiny liberal arts colleges. It was his choice to make, and I think he wanted to see how the chips fell. He is attending a tiny, public, liberal arts college. He probably would have ended up there if he had pruned his list down to eight or ten schools, but the process was educational and - most of the time - enjoyable. Why not?
