Applying to Barnard and Columbia

First, Barnard would have no way of knowing you applied to Columbia unless you tell them. Admissions to both Columbia College and Barnard are separate entities.

Not sure what kind of answer you are looking for here. If you were deferred by Columbia ED and then accepted to both Barnard and CC, then you would obviously have a choice to make. One of my daughter’s first year roommates was accepted to both Barnard and CC and chose Barnard.

Look very carefully at both programs…they differ in significant ways, the most obvious being CC’s core curriculum requirements. This factor will make your undergraduate experience much more academically regimented but if the core is your thing, that will be okay with you. Also, do a search on these boards about Barnard’s advising vs CC’s. In my opinion, that is also a significant factor.

The idea of Barnard being a “backdoor” to Columbia is patently false. The two undergrad experiences are very different, even though they occur on the same campus and students are intermingled. And there are students who are denied admission to Barnard and who are accepted at CC…
