April ACT Official Science Thread

Wait, what about the contamination one?

I chose the “So EP wouldn’t be contaminated by the NAP”, hence why it must be sterilized. However, I have no idea if I’m correct. I would like to know what other people put as well.

I put to prevent contaminating it with bacteria. I wasn’t quite sure either.

I put to not contaminate the EP with the NAP, but it was just a guess.

For the question about strains 6 & 10, it was the middle one (I forget the name, maybe Mixed Culture F or something). It showed the colony in the top-right only grow in the last one while colony N was alive the whole way through. For the contamination I put to not contaminate the EP with other stuff that would affect the colonies, but it was sort of a guess. Judging by the problems people had on like 5 questions, I’d bet (and am hoping) that getting one wrong still yields a 36, or at least a 35. Can’t wait to see my scores.

Does anyone remember the answers to the physics one about currents and stuff? I was rushing at the end and didn’t really comprehend that experiment at all…

pkm2232- I don’t remember seeing one that any of the colonies matched with 6 and 10 because none of them kept their shape when they lost the amino acids. For 10 it would have to keep it’s original colonies and lose the first two for 6. I don’t understand how that’s possible, but maybe I’m wrong. It wasn’t asking about the colonies, but the petri dishes themselves I think.

Is this the average for most ACT Science??? This was my 1st time taking it…

I thought it was pretty easy, but Science is my best section.

For the water vapor vs ice question, I put ice. I just assumed that as you go higher into the atmosphere the temperature would drop resulting in ice crystals, but I’m no sure about that one.

For the mixed colonies of 6 & 10 question, I think I said the middle one. I believe 6 was --++ and 10 was ++++. If I’m not mistaken, one of the choices had a set of dots that only appeared in the last two (6) and a set of dots that appeared in all 4 (10.)

js2393- I put the ice one as well. For the mixed colonies one I don’t believe any of them kept the same dots for all 4, but there was one (the middle one) that lost the first two and regained for the last two…which would be 6. Plus I thought that the petri dish had to be the same for the 10 and 6 which wouldn’t be possible. I’m not sure what the right answer is, but that’s my take on the question

Ah, ok. I don’t really remember the question that well; all I know is that I chose an answer that wasn’t “none of them.”

As for the sterilization question, I think I said they didn’t want to get non-NA stuff or whatever in the E, but I’m not sure.

Uh-oh. I just wikipedia-ed high clouds and it appears that they are made of small ice crystals… but how were we supposed to know that?

Yeah that’s what I said as well “So the EP wouldn’t be contaminated by the NAP” or something like that

pkm2232- The Science section usually contains questions in which you have to know outside information. Sometimes it doesn’t happen at all, but that was one of the questions where you had to know that. My post on that question is a page back if you’re interested in an explanation.

For the contamination question, I put something like

so the EP wouldnt be contamined by stuff not from the NAP

I thought the whole point of the EP was to transfer the stuff from the NAP

I honestly don’t remember the passage at all. It was one of the more challenging questions, and I read it as you didn’t want to mess with the experimental.

is there a consolidated list?

@mab +1 … the EP was used to transfer stuff from the NAP… i said you needed the sterilized gloves as to not get outside bacteria to contaminate the EP? or whatever the answer choice was

I said so that the cloth wouldnt be contaminated by cells not from the NAP
