Arachnotron's SAT Prep Advice

Revisiting some useful tips.

this is a REALLY old post but i’d just like to say thanks for pointing out that there’s a list of errors on pp101. i’ve been stupidly messing up improving sentences and the page in the BB was exactly what I was looking for.

I agree about the whole mindset thing. You really have to think like the SATs to find short cuts etc…
Im retaking in October and this is great advice.

Also with the BB you can put the answers in and it generates a score report!

can someone please provide a link to the released PSAT exams? thanks

…the guide is useless, I mean these are fundamentals that all cc’ers have.

Which explains why we have a bazillion threads asking, “Should I REALLY use the BB?”

Why thank you! Your feedback is noted and logged! :)

I thought it was a very nice guide.

How much did you improve from your first to your last?

First: 2040. Highest: 2340. Superscore: 2350.

Oddly enough, my weakest section in W is improving paragraphs. Any and all advice is appreciated. :)

Um well here are some tips

I like to read a paragraph, then answer the questions that are relevant to that paragraph. You might be tempted just to read the sentences that are explicitly mentioned in the questions, but reading the whole paragraph gives you a better sense of the context of individual sentences (critical for some questions)

Apply what you know about the sentence correction questions to the passage correction questions. There’s a lot of overlapping material

Often you will be asked what is the best way to revise a sentence. ALWAYS read all of the answer choices (advice that should be applied to the entire SAT, but especially important here)

Avoid the passive voice if possible (useful when asked how to revise sentences)

Avoid 1st pronouns unless the paragraph is a personal narration

Avoid ambiguous and 2nd person pronouns, period. Example: “you might ask why blah blah blah” is never preferable to “one might ask why blah blah blah”

Simpler is often better

When asked what sentence to delete, choose the one that has little relevance to the passage as a whole or the paragraph itself (common sense, but it puts you in the right mindset)

When asked where to begin a new paragraph, use common sense. Where does one thought end and another begin?

Thank you thank you thank you and thank you

Thanks so much for the great advice! It’s very helpful and concise!

@jamesford

What was your score and score breakdown?

well as bigb said, all the advice for newcomers are the same and we should sticky something like this around.

some1 sticky this plz

How do buy the PSAT on collegeboard.com?

Briefest but most helpful guide on CC.

My SAT score is around a 2050 (Math - +/-780, CR - 680+/-, and WR +/-600). Any suggestions on how to increase my score in CR and WR? Thanks.

Thanks, it was helpful!
