Yes, I recall reading about this but it fell to the wayside and is important to consider. It seems like most can live on campus first year but the subsequent years are extremely competitive. Will look into it further and ask when we visit too.
I fully agree that study away can offer wonderful opportunities to study architecture in situ. It’s important to ask about add on costs. The costs of some are included in tuition; others not.
Hi all!! S26 is still weighing options, and we’ve visited 2/4 schools in consideration. On a Facebook parent group, there have been a few examples of impacted programs that were full in advance of the May 1st enrollment date. We went back and double checked the S26’s admission letters, which state May 1st, but does anyone know if this is something that we should be concerned about for architecture? S26 plans to email the admissions officers, but this was honestly not something we’d heard of until today! Any insights?? Thank you!
I would assume it would be noted on the admission letter if this was the case - such as, when the school fills up, it fills up, with May 1st the absolute latest - worded more eloquently.
But I can’t imagine this would be the case - that if you were told you had til May 1, then you have til May 1.
Thank you for the feedback. We appreciate it. We didn’t want an option taken away at this point in the process, if he thought he had time!
I mean, he’s doing the right thing and validating, but they’d have to say something like we have x seats avail and offered to y people and the first x win.
It’s just not plausible especially if they didn’t say it.
I think I may have seen some of the posts you mention, and some of the parents mentioned that the letters had also said May 1 and not indicated they might fill up. However - the only programs I saw people talking about for this were for nursing. I’ve never heard of it for architecture, but definitely worth checking with the schools.
More than one of the Facebook posts indicated there was no warning that seats might be taken away if the student didn’t respond before May 1, but as I noted above all the ones i saw for this were for nursing.
Hopefully in 15 hours from now, they’ll have validation as to whatever it is.
But that would be sneaky.
Schools over admit - due to yield expectations. Why should a student suffer?
But hopefully the nerves can be calmed soon.
It appears to be a particular issue with nursing. Here’s one example as well as a general post . There are a bunch more.
(Btw this Facebook page is public)
Yes, the examples seem primarily to be nursing (aviation also mentioned), but I thought one of the commenters on the original post specified architecture, hence the concern.
My DD26 was accepted into the BArch program at U of Ark in September. She got a note in December telling her that there were a limited amount of spots in Fall studio classes and that she needed to let them know if she wanted one. She had done camps there and knew through students that some have to do summer studios bc of the studio space not being available in fall. As it was a safety (but her #1 safety at the time), she responded in the affirmative and was told in Jan that she had a Fall studio spot.
Perhaps the parent group was talking about something similar?
(As an aside, once she got into UT, she declined her spot and admission in order to free up fall space for another student. I’d imagine many programs have movement for the same reason.)
Thank you so much! This is helpful info to have for future students as well. I’m glad U of Ark provided clear communication about the fall studio space, as it sounds like some of the nursing programs that were full did not communicate that this was a possibility. Congrats to your daughter on her acceptances! My S26 reached out to his top two BArch programs, and he heard back just now from both programs that he has until May 1st to enroll with a slot held until that time. This is what we hoped to hear, as it gives us a chance to try to visit. Thank you all again!!
Yay! Not sure if you mentioned above somewhere, but may I ask what the top choices are? Are you still waiting on any RD decisions?
HIs top choices for BArch currently are U of Miami and UTK for program content, opportunities such as study abroad and internships, and no reapplication after the first year. He is awaiting one more decision from UF but that it a reach and many applied (and were deferred) from his high school so not really in the mix of consideration. He also likes CU Boulder and LSU. HWS still in the running but a totally different experience as a liberal arts college with an architecture BA. All have pros and cons, and he’s tired of us parents asking about it! Do I recall correctly that your C26’s top choice is UIUC and maybe Pitt?? Are you visiting? How goes the decision-making process?
UIUC and Boulder. There’s a lot to like about Pitt as a school but it is so hard to find out anything about their arch program, and while I love the idea of taking a couple of classes at CMU, some other things we’ve picked up about the program (just from students on Reddit because there is so little info on their website) seem, not exactly offputting, but inferior to the experience at the others. I think C26 is 99.9% going to commit to UIUC unless something really bad transpires during the campus visit (spring break). We have another visit to Boulder scheduled the week after that, but tbd whether we get there.
