Likelies are available mainly at Ivies for athletes.
@texaspg The “likely” letter suggests it has been sent to a very small number of candidates based on their outstanding performance and potential both inside and beyond the classroom. It does not seem to be limited to athletes only.
@Emotive true, but I would venture the overwhelming majority of LL recipients are recruited athletes.
^No doubt about that. Likely every recruited athlete will get the LL.
This was taken out of context. Please follow the discussion whether coaches can promise something and not deliver the likely letter. The athletes getting likely letter is mostly specific to Ivies.
Most other schools have a process other than a likely for Division 1 athletes since scholarships are tied to it and until paperwork is delivered and signed by an athlete, he/she is not committed.
@ivarngizteb congrats! I also got a LL , what are your like basic stats?
I found an article in the Brown newspaper from a few years ago that says they send out about 300 likely letters, half of which go to athletes. So basically 150 out of 30,000 applicants (0.5%) are given likely letters based on academic merit. Feels pretty nice, congrats to everybody who got a LL Do you think you will end up choosing Brown? I’m on the fence…
@theoriginalclone Where else are you looking at that keeps Brown on the fence? (I’m in the same boat!)
Did anyone who received a LL applied to PLME?
@RandomRhino Lawrence (bc of the music) and Emory are two of my other favorites, and I haven’t spent that much time at Brown…I plan on doing the accepted students 3-day event, though, so hopefully that will give me a better sense of whether I can see myself at Brown.
I got a PM from someone who applied to PLME and got a LL but (according to them) the LL made it clear that it only applied to their UG admission and that the PLME AdCom had not decided yet.
Got a LL letter as well and also applied to PLME. Only a few more days until PLME decisions are out!
So I haven’t actually seen my LL–just the follow-up email–because they mailed it to my school right at the beginning of spring break, and I’m half expecting to open it and just see “PSYCH! lol jk” instead of the actual letter so long story short I will feel so much better once Ivy Day has come and gone
To answer the Q about my basic stats:
ACT- 35
GPA- 3.99 UW
Nothing spectacular outside of class, but I have done quite a bit in a number of different areas. My biggest EC was Quiz Bowl (academic question competition)- captain my senior year and state champion my junior year. I spent a lot of time on my Brown supplements though because once I got rejected from Stanford REA Brown became my top choice. I’m nearly positive I’ll go to Brown- I’ve gotten rejected from all my other top choices (except Penn, which is still pending).
