There are pricks no matter where you go.

ya don’t say:

"Ok, we won’t assume that you’re a Columbia parent. "

Ooooh, the gloves are off!! I was merely pointing out the paradoxical nature of the alleged Columbia parent’s claim, to which s/he agreed. Maybe you didn’t?

And by the way, if you want to start exchanging (verbal) low blows, I’m willing to get down and dirty. Just make sure you finish what you start. Because if the following kind of backtracking is any indication:

It’ll be no contest.

OP,
I’m not sure what I can say to you. You seem to have already made up your mind that Columbia students are “selfish/arrogant/ungenerous” based on a few non-representative forum posts. Your question is obviously rhetorical and is intended as a flame. You’re upset because of what you’ve seen posted (ostensibly by Columbians) and you’re attempting to shame or embarrass us. You want us to believe all our prospective students will be scared off by a few non-representative forum posts, and Columbia in 2011 will resemble Columbia in 1970. Obviously, that’s not going to happen, since the vast majority of prospective students will never read those threads and even those who do will have enough sense to realize that those comments are not representative of Columbians as a whole. Don’t get me wrong, Columbians can certainly be arrogant and selfish, and the general attitude does tend to be a bit brusque. It IS the city after all. If you’re truly so thin-skinned that you’re turned off an entire school because of what a few forum posters who may or may not be Columbians said on CollegeConfidential, then it’s certainly possible that you would not be happy at Columbia. Generally speaking, though, if you actually cared to know the answer to the rhetorical question you asked, you’ll find that Columbians are in fact decent human beings. Of course, we don’t have to prove that to you, and we’re just going to get defensive when you make ignorant, asinine generalizations about us in our forum. So please, either consider posts like this: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1065186847-post646.html along with your experiences interacting with actual Columbians in person when you’re making generalizations about the attitudes of the entire student body, or simply accept that we’re not going to take your ire seriously.

You’re a pre-frosh who’s never lived life at Columbia University, either academically or socially–you’re as qualified to make generalizations about its students/alumni as the OP. Also, what’s all this “we” stuff? Who appointed you the Emperor of Columbia? Do you speak on behalf of all its students and graduates?

oh man, I think I need to backtrack, you seem like a wonderful person

also in the other thread it wasn’t a backtrack, I was merely showing that my argument didn’t hinge on Columbia being pre-professional or not, hence the “perhaps”.

Meh. Columbia students are fine. Same mixture of nice and a-hole as everywhere else in the known universe. Not much better, not much worse. Just avoid the jerks.

But honestly… if you’re going to decide whether or not to apply to or attend an ivy league school, or any school for that matter, on the basis of some ■■■■■■ on a message board… you just might want to rethink that. Internet anonymity brings out the worst in almost everyone. I’m a much nicer person in person than on the internet, in general.

Also, if you want to see Columbia students act like jerks on the internet, you need look no further than your average bwog post. lol.

Really, I see the OP as basically a way to say, “you guys are turning people away from Columbia by being mean on the internet, so stop being mean or else.” And while I’m tempted to respond, “I don’t really want to go to school with anyone who would decide where to go to college based on people being anonymously mean on the internet,” that would be mean. So instead, I’ll just say, “Yeah, I see your point, but I think there are other factors that are more important, and, really, I don’t think posts on a forum are a very effective way to gauge the atmosphere of a large community.” Nice enough?

^well said, silverchris

Yes, and that’s exactly what you did. You tried to start something (in post #22) and didn’t follow through when I called you to task for it. If you don’t want things to get personal, don’t make it personal.

Keep telling yourself that.
