Are Jobs Obsolete?

^^ which original quote?

Op…

MiamiDAP, if I read you correctly, you disagree with this statement: “America is productive enough that it could probably shelter, feed, educate, and even provide health care for its entire population with just a fraction of us actually working.”

I think that statement is true, and addressing its significance is important.

Not looking for political response, back to discussion of situation with employment:

Is this situation reversible? Or is it the beginning of a new pattern, a sign of structural change?

Any thoughts on any of these stats???

I think that it’s true that with the increases in productivity in all sectors of the economy, there simply aren’t enough person-hours to be economically utilized in providing goods and services in our society to generate enough jobs for full employment for all adults. I think it’s structural and I think it’s going to become a problem, if it hasn’t already. Recommended solutions to perceived individual situations, e.g.: “work until you’re 70” will be impossible or conflict with the needs of others. People who extrapolate from their own circumstances resent and blame others whose circumstances are different for not doing what they did, even if the current situation doesn’t provide the same opportunities. I think a first step is recognition of the problem, so instead of beating the dead horse of 20th century solutions some thought can be given to coming up with solutions for our actual current economy.

Your comment in post 97…how so? Please explain as an adult would, instead of just giving us an adolescent drive-by. I see that grown-ups with drastically different viewpoints had a relatively civil discussion about real issues. Something about that bothered you. What was it? Certainly, there are many other threads here with different topics and players, so it isn’t as if someone forced you to read it, right?
