are "learning styles" a myth??

And that sort of study is limited by the task or circumstances chosen for the study. At best it can prove that in circumstance A, when given task B, the researchers did not see evidence of C. That does not mean that the general proposition C has been disproven. At best the researchers have simply shown a set of circumstances in which proposition C does not apply. And even that conclusion would only be valid if the study could be replicated and there is a sufficient sample size.

There is tremendous variation in human brain structure and function. Sometimes brain researchers select their samples to screen out differences – for example, choosing to work with only right-handed subject because it is known that in some cases, left handed individuals have divergent lateralization patterns.

Very interesting discussion. I’ve read most and admittedly skimmed some posts.

In my opinion ‘learning styles’ for lack of a better word are ‘real’. I’m sure of it. However, I think we are a long way from understanding the basis for learning differences, which is complex. The brain is complex and their are countless individual differences in anatomy, physiology, function … There is a biological basis for differences in processing sensory input: how it’s perceived, processed, retained, assimilated, accessed and so no …

The science is evolving and we will at some point have a more accurate and thorough understanding of ‘learning’ and how it takes place. In the mean time practically teachers, students and … everyone since we’re all learning all the time … must work with our current understanding, definitions, strategies …

At one time we imagined the earth was flat, but we know better now and have sent probes to the edges of the solar system and will no doubt walk on Mars in a few decades and then … Sometimes I think with the understanding of human cognition / the mind / the brain most of us are flatlanders … perhaps all of us.

These discussions are useful if they compel us to question our ideas rather than just defend them. A good dose of humility is gold. When we realize how little we know … that’s when discoveries are made. Humans are not a sedentary species.

To conclude, are ‘learning styles’ ‘real’? Yes and No.

Even before I taught anyone that they are real.

For me, if I meet someone, I will likely forget their name 30-45 seconds after the introduction. If, however, I see a nametag or something with the name written near their face, I will remember it for years.

I have actually freaked out a couple of people who I had not seen in years when I recalled their name.

Every individual is different and they each have specific characteristics that are unique to them including how they learn. Hope this helps!

Have you all had professors with different teaching styles? Are different teaching styles a myth?

The idea teens need more morning sleep has been around for a while. But there will be some researchers who try to criticize it’s based on false socio-cultural preconceptions.
