Are Low AP Scores an Elite-College Deal-Breaker?

@ming3282 -It sounds like you’ve got a lot on your plate and my advice would be to NOT try to self-study for an AP test for a class you took as a freshman. Instead, take Physics C as a senior if possible and don’t even report your Physics 1 score, if you do. (I realize that colleges won’t see your Physics C score before they make their decisions but, even so, omit the Physics 1 score if you’re taking Physics C.)

You can also take the Physics Subject Test in your senior year so the colleges will have THAT score before making a decision about you.

@sneharams -The Gov score will not be consequential in your admission outcomes. Feel free to omit it, but it won’t hurt you if you include it.

@Sally_Rubenstone thanks! Do you think that if I don’t include it, they will think I received a 1 or a 2 though?

@sneharams -Yes, it’s possible that the college folks might assume a 1 or 2 if you don’t report the 3. Chances are more likely, however, that they won’t read the list of scores all that carefully to compare them to the AP classes you took. Even so, there’s no shame in a 3, and if you were my child I’d suggest that you report the 3.

@Sally_Rubenstone Ok thank you!

@Sally_Rubenstone I think I will just take AP Physics C senior year, but should I cancel or omit my AP Physics 1 score?

@ming3282 -No need to cancel the score. Just don’t send it. Unlike with the SAT or ACT, applicants do NOT send official AP exam score reports to colleges until after being admitted and deciding to enroll. On the application itself, the AP scores are merely self-reported. So you don’t have to bother canceling your physics score.

Thank you so much!

Harvey Mudd doesn’t require or recommend AP scores. Rather, they require two subject tests. However, they use the common app and thus will see my self-reported AP scores.

I got a 4 on APWH, 4 on APCHEM, 3 on AP French Lang, 3 on AP Literature, & a 3 on APUSH.

Do you think these scores will hurt my chances? I think I got above 750 on my Math Level II and Chemistry subject tests (scores pending).

Do you think I should self-report these scores?

@Sally_Rubenstone

@EcoliSkywalker -Your AP scores will not have a negative impact on your acceptance at Harvey Mudd. It’s a highly competitive school, as I’m sure you know. So if you’re turned down, it won’t be because of those. The admission folks there will look for evidence in your application that their small and non-traditional tech environment is a good match for you. The AP tests won’t address that issue. However, although some of your AP results are just so-so, it could work a tiny bit in your favor that you are applying to a science/engineering college and yet took AP exams in so many non-science areas even before your senior year. Your math and chem Subject Tests will have much more impact than the AP scores.

As an update to this thread, I self-reported all my AP scores and was admitted to Harvey Mudd College :slight_smile:
