Are students expected to study abroad?

A very few schools require overseas study. It is expensive for somebody (not necessarily the student) and , for some majors, requires a lot of planning as well. Cost to student varies considerably. Some schools pass on all the cost (and there are some that I think make a profit as well). Some do not charge more, although students will still have some out-of-pocket costs.

My son’s school says that it costs the same - they charge a semester’s tuition and stuff and send the student to wherever on that cost. Sounds too good to be true, and he’s only a freshman, so I haven’t really looked into it. I hope he’ll decide to do it, but if he does, it will most likely be at an English-speaking place.

If your son ends up going where I suspect he will go, they’ll probably have tons of aid available.

On the other hand, the normal international student tuition at the “abroad” school may be less than the tuition at the “home” school in the US, so it is entirely possible that the “home” school does better than breaking even by charging its normal tuition and then sending the student to study abroad.
