Are these Universities good enough for an International seeking low contribution? [3.78 GPA, rank 1]

Or…look at it this way. You got a 1460 despite those problems. You are clearly a good test taker and that will serve you well in the future!

With a 1460 you will qualify for free tuition at the University of MIssissippi.

Scholarships | Ole Miss

Here is their cost of attendance. Cost of Attendance | Ole Miss

The fixed costs will be room and board and fees. The others are not fixed and you can figure out how much travel and personal necessities will cost for you in particular. They offer a health insurance plan that costs $2454 a year. Student Health Insurance | Ole Miss

Even though they say it is an optional plan, you will have to have a health insurance plan from somewhere and my guess is that they will all cost about the same.

University of Mississippi (also known as Ole MIss) is a good, solid school and is pretty well-known. It will have greater name-recogniton than Minot, if you care about that.

If you are frugal with your personal spending and get good deals on travel to and from India, it looks like Ole Miss will come in right about your family’s budget, even including the mandatory health insurance.

One more question – 1460 is a great score and you should be proud of it. And some colleges will “super score” and take your best math and your best reading and writing from different tests and combine them. So if your superscore is higher than 1460, you can use that for many colleges.

See two more to go to right now - Texas A&M International in Laredo Texas - not Texas A&M in College Station, TX.

And U of Mississippi

It may not be international - can’t tell but Northern State U in South Dakota is $22,979 for tuition, room and board out of state - and you can qualify for up to $16K merit. Maybe Intl is not as rich but seems worth a try.

The third link is for Oklahoma Panhandle U - also looks good.

Problem is - neither has CS - would other majors sort of work?

I agree that he’d be better off with a degree from MIT or Hopkins, but I just don’t think that is probable.

From the beginning of this thread, OP has insisted it is USA or bust and that’s the #1 priority. We’re just trying to give the most likely scenario given the grades and scores, and the budget.

I do disagree that a degree from Minot (or one of the MANY other USA schools that are unknown) is useless. Many schools that are discuss all the time on CC are unknown to most of the US, never mind the world, and students from those schools get hired after graduation. When my daughter was looking at schools, I mentioned to another parent, a parent with a masters in music and who helped out with documentation in the guidance office (so not unaware of colleges), that we’d visited Smith. She’d never heard of it. My daughter ended up at a school that many didn’t know about, even at her hs that was only 2 hours away. But engineers, and engineering companies’ hiring departments, know about it. All of her classmates have jobs (all who want them), even the non-engineers. That school was about 1/3 international so someone is hiring them.

Maybe companies in India just want people with college degrees, especially degrees from the US?

But I agree there are probably better options (India, China, Australia?) OP isn’t interested in them. I got the impression he’d rather go to ANY US school than stay in India, and Minot is in the USA.

It’s not. In fact it’s downright unlikely.

Not what I said at all — so there’s no disagreement. I was specifically commenting in the context of the OP’s situation as someone returning to work in India.

No, they don’t. I know because I have a large team there. It’s a competitive market, and which school you went to does make a difference. I’m not suggesting that the OP won’t get a job — just that an unfamiliar name won’t give him a leg up simply because it’s from the US.

Yes, that’s true, and it’s his prerogative. I’m just not convinced that’s the best path for the OP versus, for example, coming here for a graduate degree later instead.

(ETA: And of course, his choice would have been a non-issue if he wasn’t going to be using up substantial savings and taking out loans).

You are right.

It’s going to be a 1470 with the superscore…

Yes I did.

What do you think about ed 2 to CMU-Q Qatar @MYOS1634 . I mean the campus and the degree has the same value and seems great. But as you said, there is going to be some restricted nature in qatar. It’s a hard choice to pick that or this.

So I got a really good financial aid from Washington college it brings my cost down. But still there a huge leap. Do you people think there might be any ability for me to negotiate the aid here? 38.5k Is a huge bridge to gap

I think there’s many small LACs that are very aggressive. They can’t get anyone to pay full price - they come out very aggressive, even for less accomplished.

I think Susquehanna is likely very, very aggressive, more so - as a similar school.

I’m guessing - you need another half off + from here - it’s not happening. Schools need revenue and Wash College had a financial scare a few years back.

But you can always let them know your situation, if they hit a certain price, that you’ll come.

The worst that they can say is - no.

You’re welcome!

Check their deadlines and make sure to apply in time. I think you have a very good likelihood of acceptance at an affordable price at both Ole Miss and Minot. They will be very different campus experiences.

I don’t think they are going to give you enough extra to make it affordable, but you can always ask.

I would write a polite email saying that you are so excited by the admission and would love to attend but that unfortunately you cannot afford the current cost of attendance, even with their generous financial aid. Ask if there is any possibility of additional aid.

If you know that you would attend if they were affordable, you can say that too (ie, if they are your first choice you can say that and that sometimes will encourage them to provide more aid. But only say it if it is true).

@kelsmom , @Mwfan1921 anyrhing to add? Should the OP mention his budget in the email or remain vague?

Awesome!
