Thanks, he got covid immediately followed by flu. And then some nasty tendinitis in his rush to catch up so he had to take yet another week off to heal. He is currently healthy and dropping time with what is likely his last meet next week. Thankfully track sprinting doesn’t involve much cardio. He also swims and if he had been out of the pool for as long as he was off the track it would have been curtains.
Distance swimmer so I know exactly what you are talking about!
Sorry about the illnesses. I’d try to get into post season meets if it works for you. USATF meets, Nike or NB outdoor, anything. Unless he’s mentally done, just to get a read on where he’s at.
I do agree that there are a lot of opportunities for track and field recruits late in senior season. Maybe not at the few dozen schools that get a lot of attention here on CC, but at the vast majority of other schools.
Obviously it means going through a more normal application process in case the athletic piece doesn’t work out. But I know athletes who changed plans in May and even as late as July because performances and available opportunities fit right.
He will go through the application process assuming he will not improve any further (although I know he will.). He doesn’t plan to ED or sign anything unless it’s a spectacular offer.
I would love for him to pursue some early summer competitions but we will see. There’s no AAU teams in close proximity to train with and the intense summer heat will hit soon so I don’t know how fun that would be for him.
Sorry OP for high jacking, this will be my last post.
Don’t apologize! I love hearing everyone’s journey. Best of luck to your son. He sounds like he’s got a great future!
I think it was the rest of us, not you, that went on a bit of a tangent. But I figure it’s all helpful to recruits traveling a similar path.
Good luck to both/all sprinters on the remainder of the season!
I’m not disagreeing that late signings do occur, but here’s some food for thought on that issue: many of these late signees at top programs(like USC, LSU, and Texas you mentioned) are kids that already have multiple offers or even verbal commitments at very good programs. They are leveraging late senior season success to go from a good program to a great program. Don’t head into senior spring with no eggs in your basket.
