*I thought the beer of choice was Pabst Blue Ribbon, drunk ironically. *

You are correct, although there is now a brewer’s district.
My D tells me cans are actually easier to recycle, but I can’t drink beer out of a can.

Yeah, PBR, and Rolling Rock and Yuengling, too, seem to get hipster love. But I have been to the top of the mountain, and I have seen the hipsters drinking a shotload of coffee imperial stouts, saisons, quadruppels, ultra-hopped ales, and all sorts of fermented beverages with cutesy brand names from producers you have never heard of. And I have used Google Maps and a phone to help a carful of future graphic novel grad students find the Three Floyds brewery in Munster IN.

Cobrat, Oberlin produced Lena Dunham, two out of three Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and one of two founders of the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Not to mention Liz Phair, the perfect proto-hipster. One of my daughter’s best friends growing up went there, and went through a phase of refusing to listen to any music recorded after she was born. Since graduating, she has worked as a new media consultant, an organic baker, and now she is doing some sort of artisanal food business in Vermont. Oberlin is hipster central, yes.

Wait is this the Onion?
<a href=“Hipster wannabes get facial hair transplants”>http://nypost.com/2014/02/25/hipster-wannabes-forking-over-thousands-for-facial-hair-transplants/

A yuppie is a white urban male without facial hair. A hipster is a white urban male with facial hair.

Both terms are so overused that they have become meaningless.

It’s not an ethnic thing.

Should that be “poseurs”?

Do hipsters want to make a lot of money? I think my kid is a hipster but he wants to make a lot of money.

ICant

Rent for a one bedroom apt in my neighborhood starts at $1,800-$2,000, so Id say hipsters are doing ok.
Raw denim & locally sourced cannabis doesn’t come cheap.

LOL!

My hipster friend is skinny and under 5’8", so maybe cobrat has something!

I wear raw denim and I’m too old to be a hipster! :)

I thought the beer of choice was Pabst Blue Ribbon, drunk ironically.

That’s in the northwest … in the midwest, microbrews are the hipster thing.

And my hipster son is 6’0’’ and skinny!

@JHS - I give. Please, what’s “pickling”?

There’s this cucumber thingy…called “a pickle”

<a href=“We can pickle that (Portlandia) - YouTube”>We can pickle that (Portlandia) - YouTube;
<a href=“We can pickle that (Portlandia) - YouTube”>We can pickle that (Portlandia) - YouTube;

You might be a hipster if…

You only own skinny jeans
You wear a hat, ironically
You have a trust fund
You have strong opinions about which neighborhoods are good to live in and it has nothing to do with cost
You wear big black glasses
You only listen to the latest indie records, on vinyl
You buy organic, everything
You have an iphone, but only because all of the other unique people do

Whoa. Random. Thanks musicamusica for the explanation.

stradmom—you forgot the pickles

a big hipster thing here in LA are the new serious young carnivores. D went to a dinner party (Highland Park of course)last year where she got to watch the lovely female host slaughter and dress the bunnies she raised in the back yard.

Good thing I didn’t have a mouthful of tea…
One of mine is clearly post-hipster and making little money at a non-profit. Kind of “I rode fixies when fixies weren’t cool”.

calla1–to paraphrase Freud: sometimes a pickle is just a pickle

What I see locally is a lot of what I would call “heritage hipsters.” These are people who adopt a “hook” from another time or place as a key part of their identity. I know a guy in Chicago who is all into English haberdashery and “bespoke” clothes and dresses like he walked off the set of a PBS series. In my own circle of acquaintances I see the ironic southerners who own a fair-trade business and play in a band, and the self-conscious young couple who have retro '50s-style clothes and hairstyles and document every aspect of their hipper-than-thou lives on social media.

As for the skinny jeans on men, I think that is more of a chicken/egg question. If you are a grown man who is only 5’7" and 135 pounds, the hipster look is a great way to embrace your lack of size and wear things that would look stupid on bigger guys. And of course skinny jeans roll up so nicely and don’t get stuck in the chain of your fixie. :)
