Are you better off attending a slightly less competitive school?

Around 2006, Daniel Golden wrote a book called “The Price of Admission”. Not gospel, but revelatory.

“How much does it cost to buy your child’s way into college?” Now, I’m thinking that BS tuitions, much like many private college’s, were around $35,000 way back then! So, it’s interesting to speculate on current numbers.

“Educational consultants say a five-figure donation - as low as $20,000 - is enough to draw the attention of a liberal arts college with an endowment in the hundreds of millions. At an exclusive college, it can take at least $50,000 with some assurance that future donations will be even greater. At top-25 universities, a minimum of $100,000 is required; for the top 10, at least $250,000 and often seven figures.” (p. 60)

You’ll have to read for yourself to decide to what extent there is merit in the reporting, but if we assume any truth here, the short answer to your (tongue in cheek) question
is . . . PROBABLY NOT!
