Similar and different. All three had a senior year HS class with a very wise man and all three absolutely LOVED him. On Day 1, he asked Child #3 “are you more like your brother or your sister?” and she said “a little of both.” On the last day, she asked him “Am I more like my brother or my sister,” and he said…“a little of both.”

Very different.

I have 4 brothers, 2 of whom are twins. We are all very different … VERY different.

My 2 daughters look so much alike they are often mistaken for twins. Much to the dismay of the elder one, who is 5 years older. When the second was born we said to each other, “Oh, a little girl… we know all about these!”. Could not have been more wrong, and they could not be more different.

We have a girl and then a boy almost 3 years younger. Yes/Yes. Very similar, and also very different. We got lucky… they have always been close, and as adults they are still good friends.

Different in looks and in personality.

Two boys - night and day.

S1 Mathguy, “I’m not anti-social, I’m just not user friendly”, came out of the womb wanting to know how things worked. Taught himself to read before he was willing to do much talking. Photographic memory.

S2 Mr. Social, talked a blue streak with so many letter substitutions we often didn’t know what he was saying. Didn’t learn to read until 2nd grade. Was always 6 months behind the school program. Last kid in his class to know his times tables, though truth to tell he still doesn’t really know them. Always analyzing how people think, why they were doing what they were doing. History buff.

In common both read sci fi and fantasy and ended up with virtually identical SAT CR scores. Both love board games and computer games. Both are taller than their parents. Older one takes after my family in looks, younger one more after his Dad. Both seem to be losing their hair.

My siblings? We were all good at math. My two brothers both got into computer programming. I took a course first term freshman year and bombed it. (Not really, but it was one of my many B’s.)

My younger sister and I have eerily similar mannerisms-- a way of laughing, a certain tone of voice we use when we are joking, that sort of thing. Drastically different interests, skills, aspirations, sense of humor, etc. I am still getting to know my older sister in some ways since she was out of the picture for a lot of my childhood, but I am realizing she and I have the same sense of humor and in a lot of ways we think the same… our sense of logic and our way of looking at the world is very similar. We are actually more similar than I am comfortable with given her many many issues which we thankfully do not have in common. She is something like 8 years older than me, and though we have different fathers she was raised by my parents-- so some nature vs nurture going on there.

It’s fascinating to see the more subtle differences and similarities. There is a lot none of us noticed until my fiance (an “outsider”) came onto the scene to point them out. Like all the women in my family make what he calls a “bird noise” when we are startled (kind of an AAAACK!), he teased me for it when we were dating and I told him I picked it up from my mom and then realized my sisters and my grandma do it, too.

My younger sister and I, we are four years apart, and when we were younger we went back and forth every few years between being best friends and being more distant. We had a very, very bad relationship for a while when I was a young adult/college aged person and she was a teenager, she just would have preferred if I was never born apparently. Not sure what was up with that but we are starting to become more close now that we live apart full time, she is still with mom and dad. My older sister and I, I think, would be extremely close were it not for her array of mental health issues-- which is impressive, I think, considering she was gone from when I was 9 until I was 17 and even once she was back we very rarely saw her. Complicated situation. She really genuinely hated me when I was first born, was not happy to no longer be an only child.

My sister and I are nothing alike. Physically I’m tall, skinny, and pale. She’s short, not skinny, and has olive-colored skin. She’s outgoing, selfish, and dominant. I’m introverted, anything but selfish, and submissive. I’m working on my MPH whereas she flunked out of a directional college.

She’s 5 years older than me and most people don’t even know that we have a sister (most of her friends don’t know about me and my friends don’t know about her). We barely have anything resembling a relationship. I’ve tried to change this many times but gave up. Now that I’m getting married, she appears to be trying to have a relationship with me- but I think that either A- there’s something in it for her (not sure what) or B- she’s lonely because most of her friends have left her and she has no relationship with her mom and brothers.

My twin daughters were born a minute apart…different in every way! Tall/short blue eyes/brown eyes blonde/ brunette. Outgoing/quiet Fun loving /serious…and it is making the studious/serious one mad that her sister has been accepted to some of the same schools. She is convinced her application helped her sister get her in… “here I worked my as* off for 4 years…”

D and S are 20 months apart (D’s oldest). Totally different in personality, similar looks. One’s a total type A personality who was wildly academically successful & social, and the other much more laid back, smart but not as driven, more of a thinking-introvert type, definitely not into “mainstream” things. Not exactly “friends” but they’re becoming closer as they have aged. I suspect they won’t fully appreciate each other until into their late 20’s. I will say I’ve seen more closeness develop in the past couple years even though they still live (and have since college) miles apart.

Both D’s have the same quirky sense of humor and enjoy the same music but that is where the similarity ends. Oh, and they both have blue eyes

D1 is willowy, fair, dark haired, gracious, shy, timid & cerebral.

D2 is tall, strong, blonde, tan, athletic, loud, confident & not scholastic.

Very few people believe they are sisters. Remarkably, they looked very similar as babies.
