“Somewhat offensive” that you’re “fine” with gun suicide? Just … wow.

Ask the parents of the kids Elliot Roger killed with his gun if it would have been “any better” of he hadn’t had one.

Twisting what I said again, LasMa. Yes, I am fine with him killing himself. I am not fine with him killing anyone else. Actually, it’s quite possible, perhaps likely, the parents of a victim would be fine with him killing himself, as well. Not sure why this is a “wow”, but whatever.

I don’t understand what we are discussing anymore.

Do those who refute the 40% as inaccurate have a link to research they agree with?

Ha . . . @VeryHappy . . . hard to tell. I am discussing what I will call “gun culture” - the idea that guns provide a solution to life’s problems - the way others talk about “drug culture”. This kid in Oregon seems to have been influenced by some kind of “gun culture” in his online activities and in discussions with his extended family members. Whatever the issue, more guns and more armed presence was the answer. When he had a beef with fellow classmates who he saw as “sinners” he turned to guns to “solve” it. His religious tradition might have said to go door to door and witness and testify and all that but instead he chose a different path.

I guess the same could be said for gang related deaths . . . guns are the answer to solve perceived slights and offenses. Nancy Lanza and the parents of Kip Kinkel both supplied their own disturbed sons with weapons as a kind of bonding thing . . . well at least he’s showing an interest in something. I mean really! My kid was disturbed and acting out so I bought him a gun and took him to the shooting range because he seemed to like it and it gave him an outlet?! Kip Kinkel, like Lanza, later used those guns to murder his parents.

From Dragonfly garden’s link. What the speaker fails to mention is that the federal government “decided” to stop funding gun research because of the strong-arm tactics of the NRA, which apparently wants us to know as little as possible about the facts of gun violence.

The guy in Seattle who disarmed the shooter at the college there a week or two did it while he was reloading. Better chance than any adult at Sandy Hook or Aurora had to disarm those shooters.

After firing 31 rounds Jared Loughner was disarmed by a 61 year old woman while trying to reload. Maybe they could have gotten to him after 10 if he hadn’t had the larger magazine.

This thread is interesting when compared to the thread on the Eliot Rodger shooting. Where’s the psychoanalysis of Jared Padgett, the Oregon shooter, and the judgment of his parents? According to neighbors Padgett was a regular church-goer, Boy Scout, and member of JROTC. He was also obsessed with guns and:

And oh yeah, his house was filled with guns - a .22-caliber Heritage revolver, two .22-caliber Marlin rifles, a Stevens shotgun model No. 311, a Winchester rifle model No. 700, plus the guns that Padgett took with him to school - his brother’s M4 AR-15 rifle (which was storied under his brother’s bed in the room the two boys shared), a semi-automatic handgun, nine magazines, and a large knife.

<a href=“Oregon school shooting: Collection of guns, knives found in home of Reynolds High shooter Jared Padgett - oregonlive.com”>Oregon school shooting: Collection of guns, knives found in home of Reynolds High shooter Jared Padgett - oregonlive.com;

Regarding emerald’s link above: this is what it takes, to REPORT people who make threats and let the investigators decide whether or not “they were just kidding,” “they weren’t serious,” or they “were just crazy.” Too many people make these judgments themselves and we hear about the threats only AFTER people have been slaughtered.

I agree @Scout59 and have been wondering the same thing. It feels to me like the “Spoiled Liberal Hollywood Elite” theme from the ER shooting drew people in. It must be his parent’s fault because they lived in Cali and pampered him. At least they saw that he had issues and were trying to help - they weren’t the ones who had guns laying all over the house including military weapons that obviously were not secured or he wouldn’t have been using them.

Well, the mental health and bullying issues came up in the ER case because the family attorney released a statement the morning after the shooting spree highlighting those issues, specifically.

Otherwise what?
That claim is wrong as others have cited.
