In this country we don’t treat everyone as potential criminals and take away rights because of the fear that some objects are able to be misused by some people. And as far as the statement “if he hadn’t had high-capacity magazines/clips”, that seems a lot like saying if heroin was illegal then nobody would be able to overdose on it. And yet it’s pretty clear that’s not the case, along with every other illegal item that just makes its way into the black market making the problem even worse. You weren’t around during prohibition but it’s well documented, criminalizing things don’t make them go away. All it does is limit the freedom of good intentioned people and has no affect on bad intentioned people. And keep in mind you’re talking about a box with a spring in it, not exactly hard to improvise yourself unlike drugs, where even they have no problem being distributed illegally.

Oh yes, Adam Lanza’s “rights” were preserved. Do you also believe that 26 innocent people had the right to not have their lives violently taken? Were their rights subordinate to his? Or were they simply collateral damage, the price that had to paid to create the world in which Adam Lanza could get his hands on all that firepower?

There’s never a guarantee that people are going to respect your rights, so I don’t why in the world you expect that. People that violate others are punished and that’s all that can be done, other than stopping them in the act if possible. But to treat millions of gun owners as potential murderers just because of the actions of one guy is completely insane and authoritarian. How about we all just live in padded cells so nobody can kill each other. Would that make you feel better?

You’re missing the point entirely, it isn’t a case of “one or the other”. Merely having guns and high capacity magazines doesn’t affect anyone unless they are used illegally, and by definition it’s already illegal to do that. Do you think Lanza didn’t care about laws against murder but all of the sudden would care about laws regarding magazine size if they were illegal? You can make laws outlawing an infinite amount of murder methods but since it doesn’t affect the murderer at all, all it does is affect everyone else for no reason, in order to make you feel like you’ve done something.

You miss the point. If those magazines were illegal, over time there would be fewer and fewer of them, and they’d be less and less available to the Adam Lanzas in this country.

That’s what they said about drugs when advocating for making them illegal, yet when you take a step into reality you’d see the result is the opposite. Not to mention with modern technology such as 3d printers you can easily print out your own magazines, and I’d like to find out how you plan on stopping that. Maybe after you’re done trying to figure out how to combat freedom, you can try figure out why inner city gangs like to shoot each other so much.
