Are you ready for some March Madness!!!!

DogHenry wins the pool! Woo hoo! Maybe I should take him to Vegas.

Uconn’s recruiting violations had nothing to do with last year’s ban on post-season play. The recruiting violation resulted in Calhoun being suspended for 3 games, and limitations on contact with recruits. Some assistant coaches resigned. The post-season ban was solely the result of poor academic progress which involved players who were no longer on the team.

It was a great victory by a very motivated group of players and coaches.

You mean it’s better that UConn’s players were so bad in school? And that it’s all fine that they’re not at UConn anymore? (Though unless your name is Bluto college doesn’t last forever.)

I read a piece in which star guard Napier says he goes to bed hungry some nights. That’s nuts; he gets a meal plan and can eat as much as he wants.

I do give UConn credit for one thing: the entire team isn’t made of guys who go to school for 1 term and then only play basketball before declaring for the draft.

BTW, I would bet that if Calipari goes to the NBA, sanctions at Kentucky are coming.

1975 — Upset over two turnovers in a Big Ten game, Knight grabs sophomore Jim Wisman by the jersey and jerks him into his seat.

1979 — Knight is charged and later tried and convicted in absentia for hitting a policeman before practice at the Pan American Games in Puerto Rico, although extradition efforts are later dropped.

1981 — Knight gets involved during Final Four in a shoving match with an LSU fan who said Knight stuffed him in a garbage can at a hotel.

1983 — Knight criticizes Big Ten officiating by standing at midcourt and cursing at Big Ten Commissioner Wayne Duke, who is in the press box. Two days later, Knight assails the referees for the “worst officiating I have seen in 12 years.”

1985 — Tosses a chair across the court during a game against Purdue, prompting his ejection and one-game suspension by the Big Ten.

1987 — Bangs fist on the scorer’s table after being assessed a technical foul during a game against LSU. The university is fined $10,000 by the NCAA and Knight receives a reprimand. Refuses to let his team finish an exhibition game against the Soviet Union after he was ejected for arguing with a referee and is later reprimanded by the university.

1991 — Publicly feuds with Illinois coach Lou Henson, who calls him a “classic bully.”

1993 — Is suspended for one game after a sideline tirade in a 101-82 victory over Notre Dame in which he screams at his player son, Pat, and kicks at him. When fans behind the Indiana bench boo, Knight turns and responds with an obscenity.

1994 — Head-butts Sherron Wilkerson while screaming at him on the bench but says it was unintentional.

1995 — Is reprimanded and fined $30,000 by the NCAA for an outburst at a news conference at NCAA tournament. Upset that an NCAA media liaison erroneously says he would not attend the news conference, Knight lashes out at him.

1998 — Is fined $10,000 by the Big Ten for berating referee Ted Valentine, whose officiating Knight calls “the greatest travesty” he had seen in his coaching career. Knight receives three technical fouls and is ejected by Valentine during the second half of a loss to Illinois. Advances to second round of NCAA tournament before loss to Connecticut.

1999 — Is investigated for possible battery after allegedly choking a man at a restaurant. The man reportedly confronted Knight as he was leaving, contending he heard Knight make a racist remark. Prosecutor refuses to file charges. Assistant Ron Felling is fired after Knight allegedly throws him out of a chair after hearing him criticize the program.

March 2000 — Is investigated by university after former player Neil Reed says Knight choked him at a practice in 1997. A videotape of the practice appears to support Reed. Reports surface of other confrontations. In one, Knight throws a vase at a university secretary. In another, Knight’s son Tim suffered a dislocated shoulder and a broken nose during a scuffle with his father during a hunting trip. In another, Knight attacked and knocked out an Indiana sports information director in the '70s.

May 2000 — As result of the investigation, Knight is fined $30,000, suspended for three games and placed under a “zero-tolerance” behavior policy.

Sept. 7, 2000 — Is accused of grabbing a student by the arm, cursing and lecturing him about manners after the coach was addressed “Hey, Knight, what’s up?”

Sept. 10, 2000 — Is fired for violating “zero-tolerance” policy and for what university President Myles Brand calls a “pattern of unacceptable behavior.”

Dec. 14, 2001 — The general manager at the Compaq Center in Houston says Knight, now coach at Texas Tech, offered to fight him over remarks the coach made about the arena’s locker room. Knight commented that it “would have been very, very cramped with four midgets.” The GM apologized but did not back down from his claims.

Dec. 22, 2003 — Launched into a profanity-filled tirade after an ESPN reporter asked about his relationship with former player Steve Alford, who was also participating in the interview. Alford’s Iowa team was playing Texas Tech in Dallas. Knight later apologized.

Feb. 2, 2004 — Gets into a verbal spat with Texas Tech’s chancellor at a Lubbock grocery. Is reprimanded — but not suspended — by the university.

Nov. 13, 2006 — Knight approaches player Michael Prince, who was looking toward the floor, and sharply pushes his chin with an open hand, apparently in an effort to get him to look up while talking to him

Lergnom- that’s exactly what everyone is saying- that Calipari tends to bolt just as the posse is arriving. At least this is one banner UK won’t have to take down!

You won’t find many people that will disagree with this assessment of “TV Teddy”.

Lergnom - I’m not justifying what has happened at Uconn, just explaining that the recruiting violations had nothing to do with last year’s ban on post-season play. The kids on last year’s team were paying the penalty for poor academic performance (by NCAA standards) by kids who were gone from the program (kids who chose to transfer or left for the NBA). . The kids on last year’s and this year’s team had a perfect academic progress score. UConn had been fine in their academic progress even in prior years until the NCAA decided to raise the academic performance standard (something I’m fine with, these kids are student-athletes after all).

As I understand it, UConn basketball players have the maximum meal plan available to any student at the school. I don’t know how that meal plan works. But dining halls are not open at all hours (and sometimes these kids get back from away games very late) and, unlike at some other schools, there is no dining facility specifically for the athletes. My kids always had some food/snacks in their dorm rooms at college, but, if you come from a poor family, how much money do you have to stock your room?

When I heard the rumors about Calipari going to the Lakers, I also figured something must be brewing at UK. He left both UMass and Memphis under similar circumstances.

I don’t know about where basketball players live or their meal plans. Most of the dining halls are open from 7 AM - 7:15 PM. Some are open until 10:00, but I’m sure basketball players cannot reasonably go to late hours frequently. Additionally athletes participate in events for donors or distinguished visitors. Sometimes they can get leftovers from catering, but not always. Since athletes can’t have jobs during the academic year and working during breaks is difficult, buying your own food isn’t always an option.

Last night was unbelievable! Storrs was crazy! One more win tonight for the Women’s and it will be 2004 all over again.

He was 100% exonerated at UMASS both the player and the NCAA stated Calapari had no knowledge of the infractions committed by the player-Camby.

The Memphis issue of who took Rose’s SAT test was also not pinned on him.

I will agree that there is a lot of smoke surrounding him but to date there are no hard facts that he has ever done anything against the rules.

Loved the end of that game. Actually loved that UConn was ahead the whole game!

Now the women tonight against ND. Two undefeated teams in the final. Should be a great game!

I don’t know if anyone heard about Lacey Holsworth, the little girl with cancer who befriended the MSU basketball team and Payne in general, but she has passed away.

http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/article/20140409/NEWS01/304090010/Report-Lacey-Holsworth-8-friend-Michigan-State-basketball-program-dies

Woohoo. Women won also. Double National Champions…second time. No other school has ever done this!

So sorry to hear about Lacey. She was just at the Elite 8 game. The story of her relationship with Adrien Payne was very touching.

On another subject…Go UConn!

Even Pat Summitt congratulated Gino. Dickie V made a $250K donation on memory of Lacey.

Here’s another reason I don’t watch and think little of big time college athletics: [how to become a bag man](<a href=“Meet the bag man: 10 rules for paying college football players - Banner Society”>Meet the bag man: 10 rules for paying college football players - Banner Society).

Bumping up to see if anyone is setting up a pool for this year. We would probably need a new thread. Please and thank you

It’s usually lderochi, who makes a return engagement just for this. Paging lderochi.

I think someone else did it last year. It was a yahoo platform.

H is filling out three brackets… right now I’m watching him fill out a bracket in our dog’s name, choosing the winning team based on which is closer to a dog as a mascot. This should be interesting. Definitely requires an imagination.

And of course, based on my avatar picture, he has the Virginia Cavaliers going all the way, although they’re obviously not dogs.
