Army/Navy Game & injured US troops....

Prayerful Mom - ah yes, the “great minds” thing again!

Can we please stop mentioning spitting on troops. I have never heard of, nor witnessed any troops being spit on in front of Walter Reed. Spitting has nothing to do with the current debate of the need to protest in front of WRAMC. The more it is mentioned the more likely someone is to misconstrue a statement and assume someone has said or seen someone be spit on in front of WRAMC.

No more spittin’ people! LOL This is crazy. Bz, I promise, there isn’t any spitting going on that any of us are aware of at Walter Reed. If you read back thru all of the posts, you’ll see how its grown into it’s own legend here. There’s some great posting going on here & I’m enjoying it but can I change the subject to Shogun’s “In God we trust” money. Let it be known to all here, that I get first dibs on anyone’s unwanted money. I’ll take it!

Prayerfulmom, you have some research hound in you big time. Could have made a great investigative reporter! Get out there and find me Jimmy Hoffa! You go girl!

Apologies - I think I got a bit wound up.
Our family has spent over 20 yrs involved in Navy Medicine, so I think emotions may have played a large part in my last post. I’m sure we all hate to think of anyone undermining the recovery of wounded servicemen (and emotional well-being certainly plays a part in the recovery process). (I also think I missed a couple of earlier posts about the “spitting”).
No matter how peaceful however, protesting at a military hospital just seems so…wrong!

yea, another navy medicine person  you’re my kind of people. I owe navy medicine the rest of my life (either that or my first born child, Navy’s choice)

The act of landing spittle on somebody, legally, is a battery. [The application of force to another, resulting in harmful or offensive contact.]

Threatening to spit on somebody is, technically, the assault [The threat oruse of force on another that causes that person to have a reasonable apprehension of imminent harmful or offensive contact.]

One could bring either criminal or civil assualt charges against another. In the first instance, you would have to find a willing public prosecutor. In the second instance you would have to consider whether the damages were worth the costs of hiring an evil attorney.

bz2010: You needn’t question the motives of those who protest outside a military hospital. They are seeking publicity at the expense of those who have already footed a substantial bill.

Protesting at a military hospital is wrong on many substantive levels, except on a constitutional level. I think it would be great to actually hear from somebody that has protested in this manner; just to hear what they are thinking.

All this talk of medical practitioners has reminded me that it is time to protect the weak, defend the poor, and save the consitution by suing a hospital, doctor, or insurance company. [so that’s how you do a smiley face! hmmmm]

haha Bill. I don’t want to start a whole new debate, but your joke is a big reason I choose to practice medicine in the military. Thanks for being the resident lawyer and congrats on figuring out the smiley face.

Bz, you didn’t get wound up so no need to apologize and I was just giving you the heads up on that spitting thing. Southern women gotta stick together & I was watching your back so you didn’t get sucked down into the spit pit is all.

KP, what type of medicine interests you the most at this point?

not too sure yet. when my parents ask I say “whatever pays the most with the least amount of work”. Right now I’m debating between orthopedics, family medicine (with later sports med fellowship), or opthalmology. I also really enjoyed my time on neurosurgery and plastic surgery. My mom wants me to go for plastics or do back surgery so she can partake of my services. You won’t find me anywhere near psychiatry. Unfortunately two of the three (ortho, optho) are very competitive fields to get into these days so we shall see.

And please Bill, don’t go find a protestor for the sake of picking their brain, I beg you. Nope. Not a good idea. Try this one :D

Add on- KP too many little bones all over in ortho. I really gotta stay in good with you & Bill. Bill can come get me out of jail if I ever come across a spitting protestor and you can fix all the little bones in my foot when I… well you know… trip on somethin’.

JM - Thanks for watching my back & keepin’ me outa the “spit pit”!

B0510 - Appreciate the legal rundown. This topic had me researching decency laws in various states earlier. Next time I’ll just ask you!

kp - Best docs anywhere are in Navy Medicine! BZ for choosing that path - hope it’s a long & rewarding career for you.

Cheers All!

JM…your post always make my day…the one about the money and possibly needing an attorney…good ones.

Kp…Radiology…good money & great hours, but perhaps over time a little boring. I like your mom’s idea about plastic surgery! (I still don’t know how to do the smilie faces)

Take the sideways one
remove the nose…and there you go! It even automatically rotates 90 degrees clockwise for you! :)

My neighbor is a radiologist . . . I think a Nuclear Radiologist? Something like that. All I know is that he drives a black Ferrari. [And Lawyers are making too much money? Excuse meeeeeee?]

haha, yeah, those interventional radiologists are one of the “hot” things these days. Radiology to me wouldn’t be very fulfilling as a career. If your going to be a diagnostic radiologist you basically sit in a basement of the hospital in a dark room and stare at a computer screen while talking into a phone at a speed that would make auctioneers jealous. I need more patient interaction than that. The radiologists are loving and cursing the new technology of digital imaging. It allows them to do their job from the beach or if their fears are realized, from India.

forgot to add: Bill if you want to drive up the pay for lawyers stop letting everyone who pays into law school  If you compare the number of law schools to the number of medical schools you might be surprised by how few med schools there are: some states don’t even have a single medical school.

PM,

To make the smiley faces, you cannot use the ‘quick reply’. Hit the ‘Reply’ link in the actual post. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and hit the ‘smilies’ link. You’ll then be given the secret code for each of the faces. (It took me about 6 months to figure this out. And I still can’t do the quote boxes.)

:) …thanks momoftwins and dad2b

kp2001: stick to opthomology- lets you do a little medicine, a little surgury, and all at pre-scheduled office hours! Hard to get a fellowship, but you never know! Actually allows for a family life!

Ortho: fun if you like carpentry work, but the hours are miserable. Remember, the bulk of traumas happen off-peak hours, and most of them need ortho intervention. So until you start replacing hips and knees, the hours can be tough.

Neuro surg: the malpractice is outrageous, second only to OB. Back surgery-carries a high infection rate, therefore high malpractice rate too. Very, very challenging work- and very teadious surgery- talk about long hours on your feet/fanny- and definately, no caffine for those hands!

plastics- if you are really skilled, but cosmetics seem so shallow…now do reconstructive work and you win my heart over!

now dermatology- there’s the moneymaker!! Offer laser and all the latest gagets, treat acne, straighten wrinkles and make it into a day spa run by massage therapists, nutritionists and NP’s- while you sit back and drive your bentley- the one thing for sure is that there will always be enough wrinkles and acne around for everyone!

ah, choices!

Have a dermatologists certificate is like having a license to steal.
