Ask a Brown Student

So how does the shopping period work? I preregister the day before classes and then what?

pfenix: During shopping period, you just go to whatever class you want – you don’t have to preregister. And if you want to drop/add classes, you do it online. It gets more complicated if the class if small and all the slots are filled, but even then the recommendation is to go because people drop out.

have any Brown students bought or rented a micro fridge? I’ve done some research online and it seems that a lot (not micro fridge) of mini fridge/freezers stop working after only a short time. Do the micro fridges have a lot of room? Is the 2.9 cubic feet big enough?

We rented a mini fridge/microwave on top from the university for Son for his freshman year. It never gave him any problems. We split it with the roommate’s parents so it came to $100 each for the whole year. It was worth it-we didn’t have to carry it up 4 flights of stairs (he lived in Keeney) and when the year was over, we just left it in the room and they picked it up. Haven’t heard of problems with the units.

I bought a fridge, cost me $100 and is still working (though now my sister’s friend has it).

I’ve never heard of a minifridge breaking. At leats, none of my friends who bought them freshman year had one break on them during college.

As for business classes, look at the COE concentration and the business track of Econ.

@Knownasnoni:

You should look at the COE concentration and the courses it involves. There are Engineering and Econ classes that are highly business-related. [Commerce, Organizations, and Entrepreneurship](<a href=“Welcome | Business, Entrepreneurship and Organizations”>http://coe.brown.edu/) is the web site.

I used the microfridge/microwave combo last year. It was nice to have, but my roommate and I did not utilize it enough (we usually stored stolen beer and the occasional Ratty left over). Just make sure your room mate knows that you are getting one. I didn’t really want a fridge, but my room mate had already ordered one and I had to give him $100.00, good thing I had the money at the time or this would have been a “Great” way to start off the year. (I ended up using it more than he did).

Can anyone confirm that these are the most convenient/closest store to Brown. Any to add to the list? Any corrections? Thanks so much in advance! I plan on doing last minute shopping since I do not want to ship all of my stuff from CA so this information would be very useful!

Does the mailroom offer handtruck checkout so students can get heavy or bulky packages to their dorms? How soon would it have to be back?

DD will be in Perkins. I’m thinking of giving her a folding luggage cart.

Yes you can get a handtruck, it’s only for 1 hr normally, IIRC, but as long as you bring it back they’re not so ****ed. They can be really hard to get the first couple of weeks because of all the move in people.

cali–yes that’s all true, except that you’re probably going to be driving in 16 different directions to get stuff when almost everything on your list (or a similar store) is all going to be out in Seekonk along Commerce Way.

Costco is not a good choice-- 1) You will barely have room for more than $30 of Costco bulk buying 2) BJs and Sam’s Club are a lot closer if you actually need that stuff 3) Just go to the grocery store at that point if you only have membership to Costco.

Modest is right about Seekonk. There is a Target, Walmart, K-Mart, Lowes, Staples, B,B&B all within 1/2 mile of one another in Seekonk. If you plan on renting a car, that would be the best thing. It is about 10 min from the university. There is also a huge Stop and Shop supermarket which has alot of stuff too.

^^^That’s a plus for making your Friday night hotel reservations in Seekonk. The real reason we’re staying there is best value for a hotel, but it will be nice to have stores for necessary shopping nearby.

thank you Uroogla!

Okay, I’m confused about the mailing address thing since I’m planning to ship everything to Brown.

Let’s say my name is Joann smith and I’m staying at Perkins 113
What’s my mailing address? Is it:

Joann Smith
Brown University
69 Brown St. Perkins 113
Providence, RI 02912

When the packages arrive at Brown, should we rent a car in order to transport my belongings to my dorm room or is there another way to do it without having to go back and forth between the two places?

Never Mind my first question, i figured it out

Hey everyone,
I’m new to college confidential but i’ve done a fair bit of snooping. The site is extremely helpful and all the information i’ve found has made me even more enthusiastic about the schools that i am leaning toward (especially Brown haha). So, my question:

During high school i’ve been really consistent academically. In terms of ec’s and general interests, however, not so much. I started off as a drama student and then did a short stint in choir before finally settling on art/design. It seems like everyone says that colleges really want to see firm commitment to a single activity, something i don’t necessarily have. Would this stop me from getting into Brown?

Thanks for the advice!

so major shopping should be done in Seekonk, MA along Commerce Way. got it.

What’s the cheapest/most efficient way to Brown from New York City?
I tried search around a bit but I wasn’t able to find anything

What’s medical care like at Brown?

Brown to NYC cheapest is the Greyhound or Bonanza bus that has stops… however, it’s far from efficient (takes 5+ hrs with stops sometimes). The best way, IMO, is Amtrak with student discounts or AAA discounts or whatever at odd times.

Medical care is great. We have our own 40 bed health center that has its own ambulance. I’m able to get doctor appointments 1.5-2 hrs after I call for the same day, pharmacy and lab are built right into the health center.

A question about roommate switching. I don’t want to sound negative from the start, but DS has had some contact with his soon-to-be roommate on Facebook, and they seem to be polar opposites in many ways. Maybe they will get along fine, but just in case they don’t, how hard is it to change roommates, and what is the process? Please forgive me if this topic has already been dealt with somewhere on CC…
