Ask A Current Student!

Yup, that’s the mall. Noon is a bit early for college kids, though (at least it is for college kids here). I’m sorry you were disappointed with the number of students on campus. Some weekends are just quiet, I suppose.

I wasn’t disappointed at all, but my wife was. My D liked it there which is very important. However, she liked every college we visited.
Is there a way to find a curricular for different school? We were told that it takes 128 credits to graduate from college plus Bing accepts AP test with grade 3 and above which might help a little.
Oh, by the way, for those who didn’t hear from Binghamton the lady from Admission said that there would be sending letters this (?) week.

Any chance that prospective/admitted students can sit in on any classes? I’m coming from a school where I wish I had sat in on classes before accepting admission, because I’ve found I don’t like the teaching style/classroom dynamic at ALL.

Hey everyone, Im also a current student at Bing. I saw this thread and decided to register (been lurking for a while) so I could help answer some questions.

jb12: It seems like you just picked an off day to visit; also it was kind of early (yes, noon is early for college – I woke up at 3 that day). If you visit on a warmer day and are outside around ~4 (especially mountainview, where I live) youll see lots of people outside, playing everything from basketball to ultimate frisbee.

transfer2010: I dont know if they have an official “sit in” that you can do, but you can easily just walk into one of the bigger lecture hall classes (lecture hall 1 especially) when a class starts and just sit in. Sit in the back row, and leave whenever you want. In a class of ~400 (lh 1 is normally for the big intro classes), you can easily sit in and leave unnoticed.

So, which dormitory is the best dormitory to live in at binghamton?

Hi current students!

I’m just wondering what made you decide to go to Binghamton? I have a bit of a predicament between private school with loans vs. public school (Binghamton) with no debt at graduation. I’ll be honest, I got into Northeastern and I’d love to go there but I’m a bit wary of taking out the loans. I know Bing is a great school, especially for business, which is what I’m majoring in, but It just doesn’t excite me that much.

Did any of you have similar experiences. I mean I’m sure I’ll be happy at Bing, but it just isn’t my top choice. I also have a few questions.

How is the campus? I know SUNY schools are notorious for being “ugly” and was wondering if Binghamton is nicer than most.

How is the social scene there? I’m a city guy and love the metropolitan atmosphere, but I know Bing isn’t completely in the middle of nowhere. How is it up there?

Any opinions would be appreciated, especially from business school students. I know SOM is great but first hand opinions would be cool to hear. Thanks!!!

As far as dorms, they all have their own stereotypes ie:
Mountainview is athletes and international students
Hinman is quiet/studious/asian
CIW is hippy-esque
Newing is fratguys
Dickinson is just crappy (oldest dorm)

But dont hold onto these too much. I am in mountainview and am neither an international student nor an athlete. And, I got in as a freshman. So no matter where you go, you’ll find people like you. And everyone intermixes anyway, its not like youre stuck with only people in your community for the whole 4 years.

dtc: I was in a similar position. I got into northeastern, BU, syracuse, cornell and binghamton (and other safeties). I decided to go to bing because the price was just so much better…every other school would have had be graduating with debt in the 6 figure range. Also, when I visited binghamton I liked it better in a lot of ways…it felt “closer”, like you are less of a number here. In general their are a lot of kids here that got into “better” schools but came here due to cost related issues.

Social scene is alright. Theirs a few bars that everyone goes to not to mention theres frat parties every weekend. Apparently their is also a lot of stuff to do on campus during the weekends, but I cant help you there - I normally go out.

I cant stress enough how important it is to visit every school you are thinking about. Check out the library, the dining hall, maybe sit on a class etc. You want to get a “feel” for every school you applied to, and see where you fit best.

With the way the economy is going I would really think about the debt, grad school is so expensive you could be hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. Binghamton is a really well respected school, also. I also have gotten into good private schools, but Binghamton is the place for me next year

Hey question! Is there an Honors program for Harpur?

hey, what school do you go to? you seem to REALLY dislike it based on what ive been reading? (im a transfer also with a similar feeling about my school) its in NYC

Eugene Lang College- Part of the New School. I try not to throw the name out too much because I don’t want to **** talk the place, but if I had to stay there for 2 years I’d probably blow my head off with a shotgun. Though a lot of other people like it.

I also got into Pace and Marymount- where are you attending?

CUNY Baruch on a full scholarship. i dont like it bc its anti social has no campus, and is known only for business, meaning everyone is doing the same thing which is so boring. No dorms. Great school academically all the big firms hire from there, alot of Ivy educated professors. Im leaving because i want the college experience. Ive been accepted at UMiami, Syracuse, and SUNY Buffalo so far. Buffalo is looking very attractive now that they gave me almost fully paid tuition.

I’ve just applied to Bing for now, and if I don’t get into it or don’t like it I’m looking into Buffalo and Purchase since their admissions are rolling.

My school is SO antisocial and has no real feeling of a campus environment or a community. I hate it. Plus it’s about 50,000 a year after housing and books and stuff which is ****ing ridiculous.

Good luck to you!

I know there is the BU Scholars program, but thats really all I know. Im not involved with it at all, and am afraid I have no other information.

^^ thanks a lot thisisnew, i just googled it and i found what i was looking for.

Haven’t received a letter or email yet but I am able to log into BU Brain - does that mean that I’m accepted?

hey so I will be a student here in fall of 2009 and i was just wondering about the dorms.
I know that I want a corridor style, which means ciw, newing or Dickinson. So i know the reps of each but do people like Dickinson event though it’s old? do people who aren’t in frats or sororities find people to hang out with and like newing, and does the learning communities help take away from the stereotypes a bit?

My D received an e-mail from financial aid office. No scholarships, she’ll be a freshman, bunch of loans. Since she’s OOS we’re looking @ about 27K for a state school. Not much to be thrilled about. We’re still waiting from some private schools, no state schools that she got accepted gave her a penny of merit aid.

Due to the economic climate, I’ll feel lucky if I even get loans. A lot of the colleges I applied to last semester were so ****ty with aid, except the one I’m attending now and they didn’t give me nearly enough.
