Ask a UCLA 2012 Transfer Anything

As far as housing, living south of Wilshire is not that much cheaper.

The best housing, by far, is living in a frat or sorority. The frats sometimes rent out rooms, and some of the dead frats rent out ALL their rooms - you get a giant room for $750. & professionally cleaned bathrooms and kitchens. This is the best deal in Westwood by far. And not that many people know about it. Dead frats especially are great because there’s no partying, but even the active frats keep the living quarters off limits during parties.

After that, you can try getting a 2 bedroom and having 4 people live in there. You’ll end up paying about $650 but you will have to share a room. If you live south of Wilshire, this can go down to about $500 if you’re lucky.

University apartments you also share rooms, and generally pay way more than $600 a month.

Lastly, if privacy or personal space is not important to you, the Co-op/treehouse can be an option. But even with the horrible conditions, you are still sharing a room and still paying 500+ a month, not to mention the constant partying. (I like co op parties, but living there sounds like a nightmare.)

Do you know about the Art History Major requirements? You have to take classes in almost every category - you can’t focus on just one topic/time period/region. I think 3 classes was ideal for my first quarter because I had a lot of free time to find a job/do stuff on campus/meet people.

@imnotfreud,

I definitely know the requirements back and forth. After fulfilling the 5 other categories amongst the divided A/B groups, one could devote the 6 other classes just to, say, group A6. And since as a transfer you can take about 24 classes, that leaves a lot of room to build a concentration, at least in my opinion.

So nothing to do with honors, but room to take grad classes towards the end?

I guess I feel that those extra 6 classes go by fast, and most people don’t focus on a field because the field you’re interested in might not be offered and so on.

Also, 127 falls into that category and you might take several 127 seminars - all are varied topics and seminars are important to take because its one of the few times you get to discuss in a small group in Art History. (I am taking a seminar this quarter.)

I think it’s easier to take grad classes in disciplines other than art history.

^ Word. Ever venture over to Philosophy? That’s my other main interest. And thanks for info on seminars, that sounds great.

No I strongly dislike Philosophy, at least the way it’s taught at UCLA (different from most CCs)

What is the distinction?

The focus is mostly on Analytic Philosophy and everyone who comes from CC says its way more formal than theyre used to

I’m a high school junior. Would it be wise to take community college classes this summer as a final attempt to boost my UC GPA?
