Ask an Admissions Counselor - TCNJ

Hi Shannonsings - It’s very hard to say. Typically, Nursing is one of our more competitive majors, but that can change as it’s competitiveness depends on the number of students who apply. Generally, The College has about a 45% acceptance rate. Being as nursing is one of our more competitive majors, based on historical data, you can expect it to be lower than that. We take a holistic approach when reviewing applications, so we are factoring in all pieces of the application when making a decision. Again, speaking generally, our admitted nursing students typically fall in the top half of our admitted 50%. As a whole, our middle 50% of admitted students fall between a 1200 and 1380 out of 1600 on the SAT, 27 - 31 on the ACT and are in the top 10% of their graduation class. EC’s, letters of recommendation and strong essays can all supplement applications where SAT/ACTs or ranks fall outside of the middle 50. I hope that helps.

Hey tcnj admissions counselor! I applied ED and I’m just curious, how many people have you accepted in the past who were in the top half of the class, but not much higher than that? I’m at the 42% of my class, which is poor, but I have made major improvements in my grades and course rigor. I have a 1990 SAT which does not reflect my grades at all, and on top of having three jobs in the past and two varsity sports, I do 6 hours of community service a week, and I have been for years. I’m just wondering how hopeful I can allow myself to be this next week and a half before I get my letter.

I understand admissions decisions for the spring semester will be announced no later than 12/15, but at a transfer session it was hinted that quite often it’s a bit earlier. Do you have a feel for whether it will be earlier, and will decisions be posted on the PAWS in advance of receiving anything by mail?

I sent my application in for Early Decision on November 14th. All of my materials needed (transcript, ED agreement form, SAT scores, etc) were sent in by last week. Yet, this morning I got an email saying my application for Early Decision was not complete, but when I went to check what I was missing on my PAWS account, it said there was nothing missing. Should I call the Admissions Office?

Have you started releasing transfer decisions yet?

When do the early decision applicants this year get notified? And how will we be notified? Im very nervous about this… Thank you!

AdmissStaffTCNJ, I just got my letter of deferral. I was wondering if it is okay if I retake the SAT (i have taken them 4 times)??? I really want to improve my chances of being admitted.

Hello, I’m a pre-nursing freshmen at a 4 year college in PA. I’m interested in transferring to TCNJ. Currently, I have a 3.8 GPA. I want to be a competitive applicant but I feel my high school grade will give me a lower chance. My high school GPA was a 3.0 and my highest SAT score was a 1740. I applied to TCNJ and did not get accepted. I am trying again after my first year of college but with a stronger GPA and extra curricular activities. Although you mentioned SAT score will be overlooked if students obtain 45 or more credits. The plan I had in mind is to complete 31 credits at my current 4 year college in PA and over the summer I can take courses at bergen community college to recieve more credits. But my question would be if TCNJ would consider both credits at my current college and credits I’ve earned at BCC? If so, would my SAT score be not required?

Hi all! I’m guessing all those questions about when you’ll hear have been answered as we’re getting deposit cards and some calls to our office already.

Dogmeat - if ever you’re confused about your status or something online, it’s always good to call the office. That way we can get you a quick and personalized answer.

BBall1996 - Personally, I would not recommend taking the SAT again. I wouldn’t expect your scores to improve much from test 4 to test 5. Just like all ED Deferrals, I would encourage you to send us your mid-year grades, let us know of any scholarships or honors you receive and if you haven’t already, fill out these essays: [TCNJ Applicant ? Additional Information | Admissions](<a href=“TCNJ | The College of New Jersey”>TCNJ | The College of New Jersey)

Hi Zanica - Yes we would consider and require all college transcripts. If applying, you would need to send in both your 4 year college transcript and your BCC transcript. If the total between the two college transcript is 45 completed credits or more when you apply, then we will not consider your SAT scores. If you are just shy of 45 credits or have started but not completed 45 credits when you send in your application, you will need to submit your SAT scores. I hope that helps! For more details, I would encourage you to check out this website: [Transfer Applicants | Admissions](<a href=“TCNJ | The College of New Jersey”>TCNJ | The College of New Jersey)

My daughter and I visited the campus, and she really likes TCNJ. Looking forward to hearing from you in the early spring!

Good morning, Now that ED letters are out, do you know when Regular Decisions will start to trickle out. My DS sent his application on November 1. Many thanks!

I want to apply to school with a Jan 1 deadline. I’ve no problem getting the common ap and supplemental essays in on time but won’t be able to request my grades, test scores, etc. be sent until I get back to school… is it too late or is it just my application that has to be in by the 1st…

tpcrd66 - from previous threads it looks like 2/13 was the date the first wave of RD notifications were sent.

Hello. Is there a way to contact a admission faculty that is directs the admission process for transfer students. I’ve emailed a few admission counselors but did not receive a reply.

Good afternoon, Now that ED letters are out, do you know when Regular Decisions will start to trickle out. My DS sent his application on November 1. Many thanks!

look up a few replies ago. starts on 2/15…appears to be in waves over a few weeks.

Thank you very much…I must have overlooked your reply. Looks like we’ve still got quite a ways to go.

Tpcrd66 - The College of New Jersey prides itself on giving every application the most thorough review possible. While TCNJ makes every effort to notify students regarding their admission decision as early as possible (starting February 15th), some applications will undergo multiple reviews before a final decision is made. Therefore, the Admissions Office can only guarantee that a decision will be mailed prior to April 1st, no matter how early the student applies.

Giant6756 – What program are you applying for? We do not have any January 1st deadlines. Freshman, Regular decision applicants apply by 1/15, and transfer students apply by 2/15 for fall starts. In general, the Common Application is the only thing that needs to be in by the posted deadline. Pieces like application fees, SAT/ACT scores and letters of recommendation are due by the “Supplemental Material” deadline, which is usually a shortly after the application deadline.

Zanica – Check our staff directory for the Transfer Admissions team. [Admissions Staff Directory | Admissions](<a href=“TCNJ | The College of New Jersey”>TCNJ | The College of New Jersey) There are a couple of counselors you can talk to.

I have a question for the admissions staff. My daughter has applied to TCNJ as a business major. She is considering switching to education. If she is accepted to your school, how easy would it be for her to get into the education department?

Hello, on your website it says students are encouraged to mail in a resume. I applied to History/Secondary Education, and over this semester, I interned with a history teacher. I have a portfolio of lessons I have planned, reflections on these lessons, charts used for grading homework assignments, etc. Would submitting this be a good idea? Also, how would you like me to submit it, printed out, electronically?
Thank you for your time
