Ask current Wellesley Students (almost) anything

Anyone have experience with the MIT dual degree program? Is it feasible? Only a few have been granted in the past 10 years…that doesn’t bode well

You know, I’m confused about it. I found out about it through Wellesley, but when I went to the M.I.T. side, it seemed like they don’t acknowledge it or that it is defunct. I did hear the tour guide say that kids take classes at M.I.T. to bring up their GPA. @-)

Oh lord. My teacher/unofficial college counselor seems to think the dual degree program is an active thing that a few people do and encouraged me to apply mainly because of it. Is it possible to take a significant number of engineering courses at MIT, even though the official dual degree program is maybe not a thing?

@hopefulperson I had the same question when I visited, and they told me that most people there don’t take engineering courses, but those who do usually take them at Olin…just because it’s closer and if they’re taking a larger amount it’s easier.

Well, it isn’t defunct, and here’s the dean you can ask: http://www.wellesley.edu/advising/classdeans/engineering/ddfaqs I don’t think these pages were here last year.

Neato. I’m used to 1-hour-plus commutes every day, so the distance to MIT won’t bother me. I’ll try to go to Spring Open House and ask about it.

What are your top 3 favorite things about Wellesley?

@ihihihi I think 20% of possible applicants were admitted last year, but I may be wrong.

How does first-year housing work? Do you get to pick your residence hall? Are there lots of social activities organized for each hall?

I have a questions about societies. This is based on stuff I’ve heard, so may not be reliable at all, but are they just girls that went to certain schools and are now regrouping or is it really just people that get along well together? I know there is a fee so the girls tend to be wealthier, but is it just “top 10 wealthiest girls” or mainly personality/fit based? Especially for Zeta Alpha and TZE.

Hey, current sophomore here and hopefully can provide some useful input to some of the questions here.

First of all, I got in after getting a Possible! I’ve heard that around 20% of Possibles end up getting accepted, so there’s definitely a good chance. And I didn’t write to them or convey any further interest or anything like that - just let it sit. (Not to advise against it all, but just saying that it’s not a requirement!)

I think I got my first year housing assignment in July iirc, and no, we didn’t get to pick our residence halls although certain allergies or food restrictions will have them likely to place you in certain dorms or complexes. Each floor tends to have an RA that organizes floor events and there’s a dorm-wide House Council that holds events, and a couple of times a year, the entire complex (like “neighborhood” of dorms) usually hosts some kind of vent.

Societies are much more open than that- you don’t have to come from a certain school or anything but they definitely look for you to be a certain type of person. Which makes sense, considering these are people you’re going to become extremely close to over the next few years.TZE is the most sorority-like of the societies, whereas ZA is much more chill socially and kind of known as the “quirky” / “gay” society. I have good friends in both and while they definitely have like some wealthy girls and stuff, I would say that’s not what they look for and it’s really just people who get along well together. Hope that helps!

@katzly‌ I applied under RD, and I regret doing so. I should have applied under EE…
Wellesley is one of my top choices, but I believe my chances are low, as I’m an international applicant (I didn’t get a brilliant SAT score) and applied for financial aid. However, I’ve been engaged in many extracurricular activities and have a good profile, so I don’t want to lose hope.
Decisions will be released soon, I’m soooo nervous!
Oh and my questios are: how difficult was it for you to get into the college? Do student who applied under EE have more preferences than those who applied under RD?

Hey, I don’t know what you mean about difficult, but all I did was fill out the application! No interview or anything. In terms of statistics, I was thoroughly average / lower end of average I would say- overall 3.6 GPA but around a 3.3 my junior year. And don’t worry, I’ve always assumed that if EE confers any advantage, it’s not that great considering there’s no binding contract surrounding Likely’s.

For EE/RD, if you turned everything in, do you get the finalized aid award on the same day as the official decision? (Aka sometime tomorrow)

@hopefulperson‌ No, we get it on the 25th (tomorrow!) It’s on MyWellesley

This is an extraordinary school. In my daughter’s first year, it has lived up to the best of its reputation: smart students, excellent community, extraordinary teachers, an experience of education and inspiration. There is nothing like it. Wellesley is tough to get into, but if you are lucky enough to be selected, go.

Hey, just got accepted to Wellesley and I’m curious how the physics/astrophysics departments are. Thanks!

How many classes does a student take per semester? (upper/lower limits)

ifoundalaska - The lower limit is 3, although with 3 you aren’t considered a full time student (I think). The upper limit is usually 5 and I don’t know if you’re even allowed to take more than that. Four classes is the norm.

What humanities/language departments are regarded as the strongest?
