Ask Me About USC!

I was recently admitted to USC as a global health major. As it’s a new program, I haven’t really heard much about it besides the information found on their website. Is there anything you can tell me about it? Also, is it easy trying to find research opportunities? Are the pre-med students competitive? Thanks!

Josebiwasabi are you planning on attending medical school? How well did USC prepare you for the MCATs, advise you for med school, etc?

Is it possible to double major in Anneberg & College of Letters?
I was admitted to the College of Letters with English as my intended major, but I’m also interested in print journalism.

I’m from NYC, and I’m hoping to attend USC. My parents, on the other hand, think it’s way too far especially since I have not yet been to visit USC. (Im going on experiences of friends, CC, USC’s website, youtube/youniversity tv, USC students & alum). Any advice on convincing them?

Do you know anything about USC’s Neuroscience Program?

Is it possible to major in psychology, minor in business, and do pre-med all at the same time? (and finish my GE’s to graduate)

You can major in anything and still go to med school by carefully selecting your courses. I believe psych majors would probably have enough flexiblity to allow you to do all of this, especially if you enter with many AP and/or college credits, but it’s best to double-check with the counselor about this option if its important to you.

I have a friend whose S is trying to double major in chemical engineering & finance. The dean of engineering said she generally does NOT encourage engineers to double-major in anything if they want to graduate in only 4 years because there are alreayd so many requirements for engineering.

Thanks HImom! I guess I will at orientation as well when we pick classes. I’m playing around with the schedule of classes, and it seems to be impossible to do premed/major and do another minor :frowning: and i really want to add business in the mix just as a back up in case med school doesn’t fall through. Thank you again :)

It’s a good idea to take a few courses you’re interested in, whether or not you plan to major/minor in the subject. Don’t make yourself crazy about what your major &/or minor in. Much will happen between now & even your 1st full year of college. Be open to it, as it’s part of the growth that is college.

I am majoring in Biological Sciences as well and I got an issue going on with plagiarism in a bisc course document. Has anyone had anything happened to them? What are the most likely consequences?

I’m really desperate and nervous about this. I’m supposed to talk to the professor, who is going to then make a decision. I’m an international student so I’m not really familiar with the procedures that can be taken upon this.

Anyone that knows or has had anything similar can give me an idea of what is going to happen. I really appreciate it!

Can you be specific? Did you use another person’s (or students) work as your own? Was this issue a mistake(ie did you forget to give credit to the sourse?). These matters can be very serious. I think the professor can recomend that you fail the course and perhaps USC. look at this site for more info: [University Student Conduct Code // SCampus](http://web-app.usc.edu/scampus/university-student-conduct-code/)

well, it was a lab report. I used a website that had a message on top of it saying not to reference it. But since I was doing this report the night before it was due, I did not pay any attention to it and did not even think about plagiarism. I cited the reference that they had on that website, which ended up being a major plagiarism thing.

Do you know the professor well? I suppose your reputation with the instructor would be helpful. i am not an expert in this area but honesty seems like the best policy.

No I don’t… This course had two professors teaching it, I have talked to the first professor we had for the first part of the semester but the professor I have to talk to is the new professor so I’m truly scared! He is the more strict and serious one as well.

I don’t even know how to explain why this happen and don’t even know what excuses or what to tell him to make him forgive me for this.

Are there any TA’s in the class? Are you a Freshman this year? Have you had a good grade in the class up until this problem. You have turned in other labs without a problem i would assume? i am sure that this is not the first time something like this has happened. i looked at the above web site i gave you and it appears that the teacher will make a receomentaion for some sort of action if he belives you had intent to plagerize(sp?) then it goes to the student conduct office where you can probably talk with someone there. It looks like you can always appeal the decision. Perhaps it wont even go this far. Do your parents know?

Any thoughts about storing things near USC for 1 month–from mid-May to mid-June at a reasonable price? It would include a double-bed, sofa, chairs, desk, some furniture, some computer equipment, some clothing, some household items. Too bulky to impose on a friend & there’s a gap in the leases.
Thanks!

ok it’s been a while since i’ve responded to this thread…

thehopeful1,

Sorry but I am not informed enough about the global health major to comment in detail on it. I will say that I’ve heard positive things about it though.

pumpfake,

I’m planning on attending podatric medical school, which is separate from med school, just as dental, optometry, pharmacy etc have their separate schools. USC prepares you well for the MCAT, but I cannot comment on the advisement office since I don’t have extensive experience with them.

kryshel,

Yes it is very possible. Since you’ve been admitted to CLAS, once you get to USC you’ll have to apply Annenberg to get into their journalism major.

As for convincing your parents, I am strongly against choosing/avoiding a school solely due to proximity/distance from home. Do your parents expect you to live within 1 hour away from them your entire life? lol. Ok maybe that’s being too harsh but oftentimes I think parents are overly concerned and don’t realize that their children will be 18 and legal adults by the time they start college. Out of curiosity, where do your parents want you attend?

volcomdude459,

USC’s neuroscience program is kind of a hybrid between psychology and biology. I have a few friends in the program and they like it a lot. Are you planning on be a pure neuroscience major going for a PhD or are you going for med school? If it’s the former, the great news is that neuroscience requires ZERO chemistry courses! the lower division courses are pretty easy, especially things like intro psych etc. I also have heard that you get to take a class about witchcraft or something (lol)? Upper divs are tougher (abnormal psych, etc) but I’ve heard that the courses offered are much more interesting.

texasasian,

Do not take my answer as 100% fact, my gut feeling tells me that it’s possible. I’ve seen crazier things done in 4 years (triple major + premed with religion, gerontology, and biology). If you plan on doing this though, make sure you meet with your academic advisor IMMEDIATELY and plan out a 4 year program. A note about transferring in AP units is that if you want to go to med school, your scores are on AP Bio/Chem/Physics do not allow you to skip out of them. Med schools want to see your grades in a university-level course.

ssck,

This is a very serious crime that you are being accused of. Not to scare you, but depending on the result it could end up with an autofail in the class and/or expulsion from the university (and being blacklisted from all colleges in general).

I hope for your sake this will not be the case. First, take a good look at the website that you are accused of plagiarizing off of. Also, take a look at your lab report and see if you made it clear within the context of your writing that you were clearly citing/referencing an outside article and were not trying to pass it off as your own content. Did you include the website in your works cited at the end of your report? Who is the current professor? Please meet with your TA immediately and talk about it with them. It is more than likely that the TA is the one who graded your report, so discuss with them why they considered it plagiarism. After that meet with the professor so you can defend your position. If you want to meet me to discuss this issue I am willing to meet with you tomorrow so I can take a look at what exactly happened. I feel that I have insufficient information to really understand the situation fully. PM me if you are interested.

HImom,

Sorry… I am not sure about that. I have had friends that are willing to take a lot of extra furniture etc for a certain amount per month. I agree that you have too much stuff to simply impose it on a friend… but what if you offered them a $100-200 a month to store it? Find the going rate for storage companies for the summer and pay them a percentage of that cost. I think most college students would be willing to live with some extra stuff in their apartment for a month or two in exchange for money lol.

Dear josebiwasabi,
I got accepted to both USC and berkeley, so I’m still deciding between those two hahahah
My parents and I both wonder that since the majority of my financial package for USC come frome the university grant, what if, in my sophomore or junior year, the school give less money (due to budget cut perhaps)?
Does it ever happen to anyone?

In addition, I got accepted to Viterbi School of Engineering (hopefully major in chemical engineering). Is engineering one of USC’s strong program? How tough is the academic there?

4everakid,

I’m in a similar situation as you in terms of finaid. From my experience, the amount of University Grant awarded to me has been very similar for all 4 years. Also, USC’s finaid budget actually increased. It isn’t like the UC system, since USC is a private school, so we won’t be as affected by the failing California economy.

As for your second question, I’m not too qualified to give a good answer to that. I’m sure someone else that is more knowledgable can fill you in with more details.

My S is graduating in EE this spring. USC Engineering is very well regarding. I have a friend whose S is graduating in chemical engineering and will be working at Exxon this summer, after his sophomore year at USC. My S didn’t find the academics overly arduous, but he DID have to study/work. He collaborated with study groups and didn’t have many complaints about the workload. Much depends on how well you have been prepared for engineering. If you have solid calc & physics background, it’s much easier than if you have any weaknesses in these areas.

The folks I know who have attended USC with FAid have not had problems continuing to get their FAid grants throughout the time they attended USC.

Hope this is helpful!

Have suggested to S that he ask his friends about paying them a bit for the hassle of storing his stuff with them for a month. He’s looking in to his options.

This forum is very useful and I really appreciate the discussions here.

My D and I were checking the orientation schedules and it turned out most of them are conflict with our summer vacation oversea. My D went to USC Explore in Feb and she is considering not going to the orientation. I wonder what would be the disadvantages if we could not make to the orientation? Also if it’s ok to let my D travel alone for the orientation?

Your inputs are greatly appreciated!
