Ask Me About USC!

How are merit-based scholarships awarded? I guess…how “merited” do you have to be? USC is my dream but money is an issue =/

^ It’s by department iirc. I know of people in other schools with better stats than me that didn’t get merit scholarships… so:

a. Grades and scores might not be everything.
b. If your major has a lot of highly-qualified applicants applying for it, you might have to step up your game.

note: I’m in the school of architecture, i know CLAS, Viterbi and Marshall applicants with better stats who didn’t get the scholarships.

Yes, getting merit awards in Vitberbi (engineering) is extremely competitive. The only way you’re pretty likely to get a merit award is if you’re a NMF or very similar to one & have some other outstanding features. Don’t know much about other schools/depts at USC.

I’m pretty sure the merit based scholarships (eg Trustee, Presidential, Dean’s) are not based on school. Maybe other ones that I’m unaware of, but I’m pretty those three are based simply on USC as a whole, meaning that if you applied as an engineering major, you’re not necessarily competing against fellow engineering applicants for those three scholarships.

You are wrong. I am a Trustee Scholar, and when you go for your interview at Explore SC you are only with fellow students of your major. Each school has an allotted number of scholarships allowed to hand out to people, so you are essentially “competing” with other fellow majors for it.

Damn. I can’t believe I got a scholarship then, considering I applied to Viterbi lol.

Hi. does anyone know how hard it is to get accepted into the linc program?

USC’s various majors reward more than just scores and GPAs–they often look at ECs, extraordinary personal challenges, work experience beyond the norm, and passion and vision. Write a fabulous essay and bring unique self-driven accomplishments to the table that really suit your major and you may find your GPA is not the only thing that will impress your department for merit awards.

@ladiiyam Getting into the LINC program itself is almost guaranteed if you fill in the application. However, getting your top location is a different story. Not sure what preferences were like this year (as I believe Sydney was added), but generally, Hong Kong has been very competitive to get into and then most other programs were fairly easy. So yeah, the program overall isn’t difficult to get into, but you may not get into your top choice if it’s very popular.

How difficult is PHYS135A and PHYS135B taught at USC compared to BISC 220 and CHEM105A and CHEM105B. I am currently a freshmen majoring in the biological sciences and won’t be able to take physics during the summer at a cc because I am going to a different country.

I’m about to start an out of state cc this fall.

Should I enroll in the A.A transfer degree program or the A.F.A?

I want to apply to usc cinema for the junior year.

The two programs are similar except the A.A is almost doubled. 2 science classes, 4 social behavior classes etc.

I’m really confused and I don’t want to take double the classes because it cuts out a lot of elects I want to take and would look good in my portfolio. (drawing, photography, creative writing, etc.)

Also should I take three language classes in the course of 2 years as well? Will it really benefit me or should I only take 2?

Anyone?

And would your answer apply to most film programs at schools like ucla, nyu, chapman, etc?

bump 10 char

College Girl,
On CC there is a USC transfer thread. It is a very long and active thread where you may be able to find answers to your questions.

Keep in mind the School of Cinematic Arts is extremely selective. It is best to apply to a few colleges. The usual advice is to apply to reach, match and safety colleges and to make certain one has a financial safety as well.

You may be the next award winning director, writer or producer. Do your best in CC and submit a stellar portfolio. Best of luck…
