Ask me: NYU 2009 Graduate answers questions (including HEOP)

ouuhhss… thank milkandshugar! =]---- wait. It doesnt matter that I live like 20 minutes away from NYU?

The website makes it seem like you are suppose to spend the night in the dorms.

[NYU | CAS | Freshman Orientation | Freshman | Preparing for Orientation](http://www.nyu.edu/cas/orientation/preparing.html)

aah… LOL, they want me to stay in the dorms? Guess they want me to pay that $100 for the 3 day stay in NYU’s campus lol.

@thinkagain: the dorms for orientation are not an extra charge. I had a GREAT time. Food is included. So…stuff your face. :)

They had us take exams (I passed out of the language requirement because I took a foreign language exam and did well), so brush up on any skills.

=/ oh boy! </-- not the best test taker =[. I’m going on June 30 and I honestly don’t know what type of test it will be. Math and English right? and um… science?? and at the third day I’m supposed to register =/

So I think my “appeal” for Housing was aproved! When I first emailed the lady in charge on HEOP housing she replied back and said she will give my situation “top consideration”. Two weeks(may 1st ish) after that I call her for a follow-up on my appeal she told to be patient that HEOP needs to look at thier budget before dealing with housing and aluded to me getting approved for housing.

Yesterday, I got an email for Ms Cabral’s assistant:

"Dear Housing Students:
In order to secure your space for summer housing, you must complete the attached Summer Housing Form and Summer Activities Release Form for Summer 2010.

*If you are under 18, your parents must complete the form labled “under 18” activity waiver.
*If you are over 18, YOU must complete the form labled “over 18” activity waiver.
Please be certain to fill out your form completely.
Your information must be clearly legible.
Please return the completed housing form, and your activity waiver at Saturdays orientation.
You can hand in these forms at the check-in desk with Gail Sidney.
You will receive your fall housing application shortly.

If you have any additional questions, or are unable to view the attached forms, please reply to this email ASAP.

Sincerely,

The email had the attached documents, and I got this email again this morning!
I log on to see my Fin Aid today. I had no tabs. I was able to see me awards before now I have no tabs. So, I think NYU is updating my fin aid to on campus student.

hi again guys… So i’m taking this placement test tomorrow and i was wondering, is the math test computer-based? As in you take it on a computer instead of paper and pencil?

A few questions:
I am a prospective junior undergraduate considering about transferring:

a) How is NYU’s campus?
b) How is NYU’s Mathematics and Statistics programs? (I’m considering double majoring in both of them)
c) Will financial aid be a major issue?
d) How difficult is it to transfer to NYU with a 3.3 GPA (freshman year only), a 1270 SAT CR/M, and a 95.8 unweighted average (with 7 APs)? (I’m coming from SUNY Geneseo)

Thanks!

How much was your hourly pay for work-study?

@iironiic

I transferred to NYU in '08.

a) Search the forum. Short answer: We don’t have a campus, we’re integrated into Manhattan. If you want a quad, if you want a stadium, if you want a football team and a homecoming weekend, don’t pick NYU.
b) The Mathematics major is very popular and Courant is very famous.
c) Financial aid for transfers is ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. If finances are at ALL a concern, don’t bank on a lot of aid.
d) 3.3 is a little low, and your SATs are low. But your GPA from HS is competitive, so it’s a crapshoot.

Good luck!

I have a question. Does it really matter if I miss the last day of summer school for HEOP?? </-- didn’t realize that it ended the 13th instead of the 12th and my mother had booked a flight thinking i wasnt going to NYU… but i AM going so I’ll be staying this summer… then she changed the date to the 12th because the website said that it ended the 12th… and now she wont reschedule the flight because it’s so expensive. So, is the last day of summer school very important? Can i miss it??

Hi, I know you said you majored in anthropology… I’m interested in nyu for an undergrad in anthropology and I’m curious how decent the program is. I mean I know nyu is a pretty strong school all around, but hows their anthropology department itself? I’d like to become a forensic anthropologist eventually, and I’m just wondering if nyu would be a good choice for that. Do you know if they have any sort of forensic anthropology classes or professors on staff? sorry im asking a lot of questions, i’ve just had a hard time finding info on this!

Do you know how much fin aid was given to CSTEP students?

@thinkagain:

I’m SO late with my replies. I’m sorry :frowning:

The TAP might come in later. I know you are definitely eligible for TAP because you’re in NY.

re missing a day: Just make sure that you don’t have an exam on the last day. If you have a paper due, you can submit it earlier. But exams are tougher. Some instructors won’t be willing to let you take it early. Hopefully you don’t have anything on that day that’s important. If you do have an exam, talk to the instructors and see if they are willing to let you take it the day prior.

re test: I think everyone was taking a paper version. This is for HEOP or for CAS. I remember you can take a placement test for CAS during the orientation…but that was paper based as well. If you know another language, take a language test in it (duh)…it will get you out of the language requirement.

@ loveu278:
If you live in LI, most likely they will offer you dorming. You have to take the railroad to get to NYU everyday? Even if it doesn’t take you a long time on the LIRR, you can say it’s way more expensive than regular commuting. I think they should give you something…

@rainrainrain

No. Doesn’t matter if you have a house. It’s all about the income. If you fit, you are eligible. I once heard someone got in thru heop/c-step and she was actually rich. O_O
…but if your tax papers say you’re poor, then you’re fine.

@Gorgy125

Good news! That sounds promising. I wish I dormed, you’ll enjoy it…well, I hope. :)

HEOP is for low income, C-STEP there are no income guidelines and the FA is the sames as the rest of NYU.

@ iironiic:
a) How is NYU’s campus?
– Taxis, people quickly moving on foot, occasionally a short man is SCREAMING “get to class, it’s ___ (fill in time)” …I don’t know who he is but he took it upon himself to yell out what time it is and rush people to class. Otherwise, there’s a nice park. Washington Square. It’s lovely, when it’s not under construction…which is always now…There is really no “campus” in the sense of a main quad that’s grassy and picturesque. It’s buildings concentrated on the E. 8th and Broadway side and West 4th. Otherwise, more buildings scattered around the city. So in one word: urban.

b) How is NYU’s Mathematics and Statistics programs? (I’m considering double majoring in both of them)
–Math is my worst subject…so I can’t comment. RUN. no, kidding. It’s supposed to be pretty good. The Courant Math building is always steaming. If you’ve seen it, there’s steam coming out of its pipes all the time. I don’t know the faculty or classes since my major was far away from mathematics.

c) Will financial aid be a major issue?

–depends on your fin. aid. situation. NYU has been generous with me but as you already know from the threads, I was a HEOP student. If you’re from NY you qualify for NY based fin. aid which includes TAP award. I think a major issue is when you’re in that upper-ish-middle class that makes a good combined income. I had a co-worker who was in that situation. Her family made good money but they had mortgage debt, student debt, etc. so of course they couldn’t afford paying NYU tuition. But since the fin. aid is just looking at numbers, the “expected family contribution” may be way higher than you can comfortably handle.
d) How difficult is it to transfer to NYU with a 3.3 GPA (freshman year only), a 1270 SAT CR/M, and a 95.8 unweighted average (with 7 APs)? (I’m coming from SUNY Geneseo)

– Hard to answer this one. NYU is competitive so it’s really a toss up. You sound like a good student, so you should try.

Thanks!

@usielx

I started with either 8.50/hr or 9.50/hr or so. I finished with 10.50/hr.
Each job is going to be different. Also, the max number of hours I was allowed to work was 20 hrs per week. I think that’s the University rule.
