Ask Mike

Well, then the best you can do is to keep reading. You can go for that upward trend of grades.

Mike, where’s Stuck?! not seeing him for sometimes! anyway, do u think there’s a big difference btw a student who gets a 4 in an AP test and a student who gets 5 in the same Ap tests?!

MIke, What shall I do? if u look at no of post I’ve made, it’s simply stagnant, I’m seeing it stopped at 387 for a long time, do u think I should contact Roger, or it’s also happening for others too :(

MIke, never mind, I just realized it’s working again, I’m now at 389!

asifkhan, some colleges only take 5 for credit, so there is a difference between a 4 and a 5. When talking admission, it shouldn’t make a difference because APs are not part of admissions.

I thought ‘some’ colleges still give credit (though less) for 4 or 3!

Dear Mike,

Based upon experience, what are the most important calculus topics one needs to know for BC Calc.?

Regards,
CT.

dear mike

my friends and i have been pondering for a while but…

if there is a god, would he be more likely to enjoy pink floyd or led zeppelin?

love, morangotango

asifkhan, different colleges give credit differently for APs. Generally, better colleges give less credit. Penn only gives credit for 5s on exams (excluding AB calc) but will allow students to skip some classes with 4s (language classes). Stanford gives credit for some AP classes (I know for all the science classes and language classes) if you get a 5. University of Illinois-Chicago (not considered a good school) gives credit for a 2 on the BC exam. If you are looking at stereotypical CC colleges, try to get 5s.

Mike, will a C+ freshman year in an intensive math class hurt me at all?

asif - there is a big difference between a 5 and a 4. But there is a bigger difference from getting lucky on some MC questions and obtaining a mastery of a subject.

Posts in the cafe do not contribute towards your post number.

CT - BC Calc, which I’m taking, seems to heavily revolve around Talyor and Malcurian Series. Those are some of the big topics along with Polar Coordinates. A strong foundation in these guys in nessecary for more advanced mathematics topics.

morango - Def Pink Floyd, but we all know there is no god.

colege - some schools, such as Stanford and CMU do not even consider freshman grades.

Venkat and Mike, thnx a lot!

wise mike,

should i even attempt at doing independent study macro-econ to take the exam in may?

if so, what study book would you recommend?

I did it, but I started in October and never did any econ for homework. I think you should be able to get at least one course in if you show dilligence.

Mike, how come when you go to a big school people form small groups and become cliquish, but when you go to a small school everyone knows everyone?

mike, what does your user name mean?

dear mike,

you are so awesome. i have an altar set up for two in vegas. care to join me sometime? :p

Mike, what did you accomplish freshman year that you put on your app? What do you suggest should be done as a freshman?

Would you rather attend a local tier2 college on a full ride or go to a tier1 school with no aid at all?

venkat - you don’t need to make it like that if you go to a big school. I got to a big school, like 2500+ and I’m not very cliqueish at all. Small schools, its hard to aviod because there is such a lesser amount of people.

pyar - There is a sports talk radio program in the New York Area called Mike and the Mad Dog, on AM 660. AIM cut off the 0. Also. I’m crazy. Like a dog.

morango - anything is possible

colege - freshman year I joined a bunch of clubs, and then decided which clubs I liked and stay with those for four year. I was a Student Council Senator for 9th grade. I also was a slacker when it came to grades, causing me to only obtain a rank of 6, when a higher rank was quite feasible, although I did manage to get all As. I also did a summer program for CTY that was on there.

a778 - Thats basically the decision I have right infront of me. I have pittsuburgh for full tuition, and I was invited back for an interview for the full ride. I also have a half ride at Rice University and a full freight at UChicago. I have decided that it does not make sense for me to continue pursueing Pitt, because I really want a private school. I do not qualify for financial aid, so my situation is a bit different than yours could be. I’m not sure if the value of Rice with low cost is less than Chicago, or even less than Columbia, Stanford or Princeton. I guess I’ll find out later.
