D is waiting for transfer decision and has a solid amount social connections at UCB already. But, what we don’t know is how collaborative the students are. She is a Sociology/pre-law path student. I’m in tech and it is all about collaboration, team problem solving, working together to enhance knowledge.

How much is that the culture at Cal?

I have submitted my intent to register at UCB. I reported 3 planned AP exams for senior year on my UC application. CalCentral (under admission tasks) says “Please submit your official scores for all Advanced Placement exams for which you have earned a score of 3 or higher.” If I do not earn a 3 or higher on one or more of my planned AP exams, do I simply not send that score? Will not sending a score for one of my planned AP exams result in cancellation of my admission?

Under FAQ’s it says “Berkeley acknowledges only AP scores that are 3 or higher. APs with scores lower than 3 are not required as a Condition of Admission.” What does this mean??

@SFBayRecruiter Yep, very collaborative. My Chem and Bio labs are all about partnership and group labs. Econ has had 2 group presentations. My American Cultures discussion breaks up into small groups to talk more in depth about the readings. Engineers, CS majors, and Econ majors are always working on problem sets together.

Anytime when you would expect there to be an opportunity for collaboration, there is collaboration and group work.

@traveler2000 They really don’t care about APs. It will not cancel your admission. You will be fine. Submitting AP tests gets you some units and maybe tests you out of a class or two. Not submitting scores does nothing. They care that you took the class not that you took the test because they can’t force you to take the test because that’s discriminating based on socioeconomic status. If you don’t take a test or report a test, they won’t care and they’ll just assume that you couldn’t afford it or realized that taking it wasn’t going to test you out of any classes and is therefore useless.

Do you pick classes for fall term? I applied as a math major but I want to do CS now, and that requires courses such as CS61A.

Thanks (Im in L&S)

Also, my final grades will read like this: 6 Bs and 1 C (I know, I slacked).

Will this get me rescinded?

@kjake2000 Yes you pick your classes and you plan your schedule.
You can’t get that C up? Or one of the Bs? You still have a month. I don’t know the answer to that. Sorry.

Im sure I can’t get the C up, theres a chance I can get one of the Bs to an A. I wanted to hear the worst case scenario and what would happen.

I applied to UC Berkeley and put Marine Biology in the College of L&S as my major. Is there any possibility, if admitted to pursue a Political Science major instead of Marine Biology ?

@32riversk We have a Marine Biology major?
Anyways, you don’t actually declare your major until late sophomore year, so you can declare whatever you want really easy if you’re already in L&S. And you make your own schedule so you can sign up for all Poli Sci classes qif you want.

Hello!! I was admitted and I am so excited and surprised…but I am a little worried.

As part of my conditions, I have to complete the classes I said I would. However, I had to drop my French 3 class because the materials were so expensive, and I couldn’t keep up with the class. Problem is, that is my third semester of a foreign language for IGETC. is that completely terrible?
I took two years of Spanish in HS, will that cover me?

I really don’t want to be rescinded. I’m so happy I got in! Can I negotiate and take the class in fall (I was admitted for Spring 2019)?

Hi, I’m a future Berkeley student, and I was planning on applying for a graduate degree in epidemiology. I was wondering what the differences are between MCB and IB gpa-wise, research opportunity-wise, and overall course competition-wise.

Hey everyone! I’m an incoming Cal freshmen. I already SIRed, but I’m getting pretty nervous about everything I’ve hear regarding competition, grade deflation, and how difficult and rigorous courses are at Berkeley. Obviously I never expected college or Cal to be a breeze, but the level of difficulty is making me quite fearful, and I’m kind of rethinking going to Cal. Any advice or info?

@kt1215 what are your other options? What is your intended major?

@collegefind1234 other options are CP SLO, Scripps (a bit expensive), and UCSB (these are my top options other than Cal). Got into Cal for Nutritional Science at CNR, but hoping to switch into L&S as undeclared cuz I have no idea what I want to do. TBH I think I’d excel in business but I’ve heard getting into Haas is close to impossible

@kt1215
If you’re not set on anything, why not have Berkeley on your resume? Whatever you do, we have a great department for, so you can’t go wrong. Scripps is too small to explore your options. SLO is a good school, but Berkeley has a prestige that’s worth the extra cost.
It’s not that hard to switch into L&S but CNR is cute and small and has good advisors.
Haas has a 1/3 acceptance rate.
The level if difficulty is not all that hard. Although you might not think you will, when you get to college, grades aren’t that big of a deal. Of course they matter, but you adjust your expectations for each class. Like, I might get a B in Physics and I’m okay with that. It reflects my effort in the class. It’s just that you won’t automatically get an A in everything. It requires a bit of effort. But As are not impossible, and you will get an decent amount of them if you’re willing to put in the effort. Classes are fun! Take some random ones.

On the conditions for admissions that you need to meet does “I agree to complete all planned and in-progress coursework with a 3.0 or higher GPA” refer to your total overall GPA at Community College? Just wanted to make sure of the wording. Thanks everyone!

@thehappy There’s an update form on your portal. If it doesn’t affect your A-G requirements (the minimum), it’s fine, but you still have to report it to the university (according to my roommate who works in the admissions office). So, report it and you should be good. But now you have to take a semester or something of foreign language in college (pretty sure), because I think 3 semesters of high school language tests you out in most majors (unless you’re like a Spanish major or a Global Studies major).

@BlueDog457 You have to get a 3.0 GPA senior year (average), or whatever year you’re in during your application.

@Justinjang2000 MCB is the major that most of the pre-meds are in. MCB and IB take the same lower division classes, but for upper division, MCB is smaller scale (molecular and cell) while IB is like Ecology and organisms. MCB is like UCSD biology while IB is like SLO biology.

You don’t have to decide what you are until end of sophomore year.
https://ib.berkeley.edu/undergrad/courses/curriculum.php
You can probably find interesting upper divisions in both majors. IB does seem less serious/hardcore, but they do generally have to take evolution classes and field labs, which I find less interesting than Anatomy and Genetics.
Both have a lot of research opportunities, but different types. URAP is a program that matches you with research opportunities. You sign up for it during the first two weeks of a semester.

Have questions related to EECS degree UC Campus Requirements (as mentioned here: http://engineering.berkeley.edu/sites/default/files/docs/eecs-worksheet-2017.pdf)

Which AP tests/course satisfy these requirements? Appreciate any help!

UC Campus Requirements

Entry Level Writing ← Would “AP English Language and Composition” score of 4 satisfy this ?
American History ← Would “AP U.S. History” score of 4 satisfy this ?
American Institutions ← Can any AP satisfy this ?
American Cultures ← Can any AP satisfy this ?

Entry level writing - yes a score of 4 on AP Comp would be one way
American History - yes an AP score of 4 would be one way
American Institutions - AP US Govt score of 3 or higher would be one way. Taking a half year of US Government with a C or higher would be another way.
American Cultures - you need to actually take a qualifying class either at Berkeley or through CC. Breadth classes can’t be fulfilled using AP.

@ProfessorPlum168 Thank you!
