@frokenclarp It’s probably an accident. Tons of accidents happen every year, like they switch the email lists or Calcentral tells everyone they got in or they didn’t input community college transcripts. Even if it’s not an accident, don’t worry about it. There’s nothing that you have to do or can do about it.
@frokenclarp same happened to me! I’m so scared
Any recommendations for public parking on a weekday morning around 8.45 to 9?
@Ranipetgirl if you need it for less than 2 hours, you probably can find street parking within a few minutes. If more than 2 hours, hmm, hard to say. I would use an app like SpotHero to find out openings. You probably would do better with the parking lots if you came before 8am. The garage on Durant/Channing between Dana and Telegraph is free for the first hour, so you do sometimes get a fair amount of cars that move in and out of there at all times, so that may be a place to look. I’m assuming you’re needing this parking when school is in session.
@ProfessorPlum168, Thank you. Yes, I need to be there with my DD on a friday, when school is in session
Are tickets to Cal Bears football easily bought? Are they usually sold out or empty ?
Well, unfortunately tickets are easy to get. Even for the UCLA homecoming game it only looked about 2/3 full. The Big Game is usually sold out though regardless of how good or bad the teams are.
For basketball, they’re virtually trying to give them away (to the students) for some games.
Thanks @ProfessorPlum168 Are the soccer varsity teams any good? DD is a decent soccer player but doesn’t want the committment of playing for D1 team. She fully intended to play club soccer anywhere she goes.
And, do you think get season tickets for football aren’t worth it?
I dunno, I don’t see a great following with the students at Cal for football as with other schools like Stanford or USC. (That goes for UCLA as well). Although my kid is in a dorm league for football this spring, which seems to be pretty popular.
@Nhatrang: Cal plays in the pac-12, a very competitive conference with the likes of UCLA, Stanford, USC, etc. Regarding how “good”, last year they went 1-9-1 in conference. Not very good but plenty of room for improvement. Playing club or intramurals at Cal can be very competitive, at least it was back in the day.
Go Bears!
does major REALLY NOT matter, i find it fishy that admissions says they “don’t consider” chosen major in L&S and CNR
It’s more common that students get tickets for 40$ to the USC game and then tickets to the Big Game.
I haven’t met anyone with a season pass. Probably not worth it if your friends don’t have one too.
A lot of sorority girls go to a lot of the games though.
@student5430 Major really does not matter. If it’s a popular major, they use GPA minimums to select people for those majors. So, if you get into Berkeley and don’t try for your classes, you won’t get into your capped major, and you’ll switch to an uncapped one. Really doesn’t matter.
While the big buzz today is about all these elite (mostly) private schools with cheaters and bribers getting into school, the vibe was a bit different in CS land at Berkeley. There was an article in the university newspaper yesterday talking about the 80-hour a week work week that CS majors and wannabe CS majors go thru. This is not much of an exaggeration, if any at all. I can’t say my kid has this pace every week, that’s not his style, but during midterms and the push towards finals, 80 to 100 hours a week of classroom and study time is pretty common. And yeah he’s limping along trying to get a decent grade in CS70 so he can declare. Seems like there is some pushback which is good that the discussion is out there.
My son is an EECS sophomore. I asked about his workload, and he said for normal weeks, it 8-10 hours per week per class, double that time for midterms (16-20) so, yeah, I can see it’s push 80+ hours a week for studying. But what can you do? It’s a very competitive field.
What is CS at Berkeley like? And what’s the difference in workload/difficulty for a CS major compared to a CS minor?
the demographics for UC berkeley shows that the percentage of asians is considerably higher than those that are caucasian, i’m an asian high school senior who just got accepted and just wondering if this ratio is obvious around campus? it’s not that i really care i’m just curious; i’m from idaho so theres literally no people of color here lol
@gr4ce156 oh it’ll be quite obvious.
On the other hand I think it’s also very diverse with all races.
for workload, which includes lectures, discussion, labs and studying, if we define easy as being <6-13 hours a week, medium being 14-20 hours a week, and heavy being 20+ hours, I would say 60% fall in the medium category, 40% fall in the heavy category. There really aren’t any easy required computer science classes. The first data science class, which is labeled as a computer science class, Data 8, I would characterize as being easy workload if you have some prior programming background.
A CS minor you take the same classes, only fewer of them, so the workload for those classes would still be the same.
How does housing work at Cal? Can a freshman have a single room or single/double/triple mini suite? Pros and cons of all the options? What unit is “better” for a STEM student? (other than cost)
