Ask Questions about Pursuing Music Major Here

@khill87, I can’t be much help! My daughter plays jazz piano at college, but she’s not a music major. Good luck to you!

Big questions for sure @khill87 . Depends on a few things, but I think you are looking for generalizations and not corner cases.

Aisde from the obvious conclusion that it is better to nail a difficult piece, I suppose it would depend on the nature of the missed notes. Your recovery from missed notes could be informational. I don’t suspect that a missed couple notes is going to doom an otherwise solid presentation. Things like bad timing or other foundational aspects of the instrument would probably be bad.

I think musical ability matters a lot. I know of a case where one student wasn’t quite up to speed with peers, but showed a lot of energy and interest. That applicant was Michael League at UNT - he said he was new to the upright bass instrument, so the professor at the audition said - OK, let’s turn it from an audition into more of a lesson. And that worked out well. Maybe not typical, but it existed.

You can get immediate yes’s. They may be “official” or not.

@MaineLonghorn Ah – thank you! (I had seen that you edited the post by @slipman2 and I thought maybe you were his spouse or someone with access to the same computer. I haven’t seen a post edited by anyone other than the original poster before now!)

Oh, OK! I had edited the OP so that users understood that anyone could ask or answer questions in the thread.

Where can I get information on auditions and preparations for applying to Juilliard, Curtis and other high level schools for a Masters in Violin Performance? What is essential to have on the resume, essay, interview, audition, and everything? Where can students get that kind of help?

I don’t think you need any special help. I assume you have a teacher. Are you currently in an undergrad program? Conservatory or university school of music or a college?

There is no set format for a resume, unless the school gives you one.

There are sample personal statements online if you want to look at them.

Make sure you apply to other programs besides Juilliard and Curtis

Feel free to ask more specific questions!

@JamesFM - All schools have all their requirements listed on their websites. That should be your primary resource. If the sites don’t have information that you need, you should contact the admissions office - they are usually very responsive to questions.

Hi  I have a UCLA Interview coming up next week that I’m preparing for right now. For those who applied to UCLA or any other music school in the US as a transfer student as a Musicology major, what was the interview like? What kinds of questions will they ask? Thank you!
