Does anyone happen to know which schools on the MT Schools listed in this forum accept/do not accept ASL for foreign language HS admission requirements? Many websites do not say specifically. I know the UC system does. Thank you.

This is probably a question best answered by calling or writing the various admission offices of the schools you are interested in. You may not get enough data here because many high schools do not teach ASL.

I’ve actually looked for the flip side of that which are colleges that will allow you to fulfill your college level foreign language requirements with ASL as the foreign language and I know it can take quite a bit of digging to find that too. Good luck and good question.

Thank you. Sorry for accidentally posting question twice. Not sure how to delete other post but if someone does, feel free. My daughter is starting high school and would like to do ASL but I don’t know how pervasive acceptance is for this beyond California.

YOu would definitely need to call the admissions office for each school that your D is interested in.

I agree with takeitallin, contacting each school would give you the most up to date information. I would also ask the college that currently accepts ASL if there is any plan to change their policy in the next few years to prevent your daughter from being disappointed in the future. I believe there are a few threads about ASL for the foreign language requirement, but in the more general college forums, so you may want to do a search.

My D has had 3 years of ASL. She has applied to about 15 schools not located in CA and has not had an issue with this at all. I had the same concerns as you. There is a list somewhere on the internet that has the states that require the state schools to accept ASL. However, as stated earlier, you should check with each school to be sure.

As halflokum said, we have had a harder time finding schools that offer ASL as my D wants to continue her education in that area.

Thank you. I have started emailing admissions, but as young as she is, who knows where she would end up. If I email general admissions, should I have any concern that the MT department or division would have different requirements?

No, this would pertain to the general admission for the college.

Personally, I let my D go ahead with ASL as her foreign language because that is what she wanted to do. We figured that she would find a school that met HER requirements!

I assume you have possibly seen this list. If not, I do not know if it is accurate or not nor who the person is who is assembling it but it appears to have been recently updated. This might be another person to ask.
<a href=“Universities That Accept ASL In Fulfillment Of Foreign Language Requirements”>http://www.unm.edu/~wilcox/UNM/univlist.html

I noticed for example in the case of NYU, it seems to suggest that Steinhardt would accept ASL but doesn’t indicate if Tisch would which I find curious. I would have thought there would be a general NYU policy regardless of the program but I truly do not know. A good reason to check directly with the schools you “think” she might be looking at down the road. Good luck!

Indiana offers ASL as one of the 43? I think they said, foreign languages they offer. IU students have to take 4 semesters of a FL as a grad requirement.

Shenandoah accepts ASL for school foreign language requirement.
